Anyone help me out with some resources for ESL schooling for a child in Chicago ?

I cannot help you about Chicago but here in Albuquerque, you can get FREE ESL classes at the local community college if the child is over 15 I believe. I brought two children w/ me from Brazil and they both have ESL classes also at their respective schools - elementary and Highschool.

10Yr GC arrived 07/02/09 - Naturalization is next

The drama begins - again!

And now the drama ends - they took the Green card . . .

Travlnmann,

if the child is 5 you should not worry at all. I live in a town where over 20 different languages are spoken by the kids coming from many different countries. We have excellent ESL program, but they don't offer it to pre-school kids. I think this is because they will learn in a heart beat without any special system.

Good luck

Ana

I have a question,

Are you looking for a school to -teach- your child ESL or a class to teach your child -in- ESL? There's a difference and I'm confused on which one you are looking for. You may have difficulty finding a program that teaches in ESL in a public school setting. You may have to research a private school. As for classes to teach ESL, I'd suggest checking out local park districts and colleges for non-credit programs for children.

This is a link to the Chicago public school system: http://www.cps.k12.il.us/

I'm sure if you look through the site you should be able to find information about the public school system andt here is a phone number under contacts that might help in trying to find a school that teaches such things.

Good luck.

In las vegas there are alot of spanish speaking kids...they learn english really well once they start school and alot speak no english at first. If you want to give them a head start though, just buy an english rosetta stone CD. Its the fastest way to learn a language.

CPS has plenty of ESL classes within the public school system. If the child is going to begin kindergarden in the public school system in September of next year, you would be best to check into the local neighborhood schools and see what they offer. If you are looking for something between April and the start of the 2007 school year, you may want to check out Language Stars:

http://www.languagestars.com/language_programs.html

There are also several magnet schools with a focus on language, although not necessarily ESL. For example:

http://www.lasalle.cps.k12.il.us/about-us.html which has an all day kindergarten program.

Good luck
