Does anyone have any recommendations for insurance companies who will cover someone who has lived here for less than 12 months? My husband (came here on a K-1 visa & we just got married) and I live in Texas and so far, every insurance company I've looked at online says they will not cover anyone for health insurance if they have lived here for less than 12-24 months! I'm a full time grad student and have student insurance which said they will cover him, but at a one time fee of $900 for 3 months, which we cannot afford. Any information would be appreciated...I don't like the idea of him not being covered until he gets a job... Thank you all!

and so it begins...

We are looking into that same thing right now, because I want my fiance to be covered until he can get a job which will cover him. My mom actually found one with some great prices, its called Patriot America for non-US Citizens and she thinks the quote they gave her (she said he was rambling off numbers) was 50 dollars a month for 6 months, and then you have to renew for another 6 months. Apparently this insurance will only cover you up to one year. And it has a 1000 dollar deductable. My mom is the one who found this so I really dont know much at all about it. Sorry if the info is not correct, this is just what she told me.

Hey guys,

I understand your concerns about not being covered by insurance, but when we moved here we just focused on 1/ getting an expedited EAD and 2/ him preparing for, applying, and interviewing for jobs and in this way he was able to start working and get insurance along with all the other benefits within a few months. Everybody is different, but to me it made more sense to use our efforts that way.

Best of luck!

My husband is not even in the country yet and my insurance covers him (even without a social security card). I have Aetna in Texas. Good luck! Nobody should be without insurance. :star:

Thank you for the recommendations! I'm going to take a look at the Patriot Insurance plans..I have coverage under UHC, however as a full time grad student, my plan is pretty shabby, thus, for only 3 months coverage they're quoting $820! Its way too much for us right now. I think we've decided to focus on the EAD and AOS procedures first.

and so it begins...

I agree, its pretty much what we've decided to do as well. How did you guys go about expediting the EAD? I'd heard some rumors that you could only do it if you have a job offer already set out for you, which we don't have yet. Do you know of any other ways? Thanks again for all your advice, your post about the BsAs consulate was so helpful for us!
