Hi there

Bank Of America's bank card totally works in ATMS in England (as well as other countries) as have used it many times during my travels to draw money out of atm or paid using the card. They do charge fees as all the banks do and I don' t know the actual % of hand but it is reasonable and very easy and less than money transfers.

My wife uses an ATM card from our bank--TD Bank--and their fees are the same or lower than using it in any non TD Bank in the US--the fees are set by the individual banks--not your bank back here. The average is about $2 per transaction, and the exchange rates are the offcial rate at the bank she is using, which is good in general.

:ot:

is it imperative to show financial support of my spouse at the interview?

i'm currently staying here with her and my child but once i leave to go back to the states i'm basically leaving money so i won't have to worry about this because the charges to send money is annoying as stated.

thanks in advance and sorry for hijacking the thread

Nope, only need to show how will support after entry to the USA, this is what the I-864 does.

I was wondering if there was anyone that new of some trusted money transfer companies so I can send money from the US to the UK and so my husband can send money to me as well..

I have used xoom.com without any problems. They are pretty cheap, and in the last transfers they have been quite fast, too.

August 23, 2010 - I-129 F package sent via USPS priority mail with delivery confirmation.

August 30, 2010 - Per Department of Homeland Security (DHS) e-mail, petition received and routed to California Service Center for processing. Check cashed. I-797C Notice of Action by mail (NOA 1) - Received date 08/25/2010. Notice date 08/27/2010.

I sent the funds for the first part of my k-1 visa to my fiancee in america via Bank Transfer. Western Union quoted me $48 Australian dollars, the bank charged me $20 australian and her bank charged her US$15 so still cheaper than western union.

At this point however, I am talking to the bank to see if I can get a second visa card to send to her, so she can just access the funds straight from my account, will still incur some fees, but will be lots cheaper than the fees mentioned above.

If you both have an ATM card it is definitely the way to go -- often with a decent exchange rate. Have used my card in 2-dozen countries -- you need to use a global machine. As far as my Fiancée, I have a good friend who has an account in both countries -- I deposit into his US account and he deposits into her account with appropriate exchange rate.

Oh ok I see. I gonna have a talk with Bank of America.. We have a joint account, but I want to know what fees they would charge for him to withdrawal and even deposit if possible from over there.

I have Bank of america and have it used it all over the world. Its 5 dlrs per withdrawal plus 1% exchange comission, wherever in the world (thats on the bank of america side, the atm you use can charge you something extra). Also Bank of America has partnership with some banks (Scotia Bank, WestPak etc) and if you withdraw from these institutions they dont charge you the fee, which is AWESOME. If you have a joint bank account and each of you have a card you can use without a problem.

To put money on the account from outside the US, use paypal, its free.

Is it possible to use paypal ?!?

I always used xoom I think paypal will work too. What I did was open another account at my bank and gave the atm card to my wife. I can transfer money anytime into her account all she has to so is go to an ATM to withdraw it.

AS long as I put 400 from direct deposit into her account no fees! All other fees are reimbursed I Use PNC bank. I really like that no ATM fees!

paypal works and is cheap too, both parties need verified paypal accounts, (tied to a bank acc,) it is something like 1.50 to send 300 or less and it stays cheap as you send more. The process is a bit wacky though:

transfer $ from your bank to your paypal, transfer $ from your paypal to his/her paypal, transfer $ from his/her paypal to his/her bank..

once you log into your paypal acc there is a button to transfer intl, i think it is on the right of the page

I've used Xoom (used it to send money to our wedding venue and also to my husband) - it gets deposited straight into a bank account and any transaction amount is only $4.99. Much much cheaper than Western Union or some of the others. Plus, if it's a national bank, it transfers usually within 1 business day.

Just keep an eye on exchange rates for the best time to transfer (have saved up to $50 at a time by just watching exchange rates for a week or so, as long as you're not in a hurry to send cash).

Just got off the phone with my bank , Wells Fargo, and they said there would be a flat $5.00 charge if you use an ATM to withdraw in England. You'd need a Wells account here , get a debit card and send it abroad. Just a thought. England isn't on the global remittance network so the bank transfers/wires are $20 - $30 each. Hope this helps.

I use (XE Trade) right now to send money between my Canadian account and my fiances account in the US. I'm pretty sure I first heard of it from somewhere on the VJ boards. It's the best way that I have found to do it for us. I had to sign up with my account number and basic identifying info, and then a scan of one of my bank statements to show the account number and my address is the same as the one I used to sign up. After that (it took about a week or two to process) I was set.

They don't charge a fee for me because I debit my account and use ACH/EFT (electronic transfer) to his account. They do charge for wiring money though, which I think is your only option from your GBP account. The first time I sent it took about 7 business days to go through and the ones after that have been 5 days or less. The currency conversion is pretty good from what I've seen. They charge a small fee but it's much better than paypal, which I was using before. They do say that some banks may charge fees so I don't know if yours would, but it could be worth looking into.

Here's a mock trade I just did to see how much it costs:

To wire $300 USD to my fiance's account from a GBP bank account, I got this quote:

Exchange Rate: 1 GBP = 1.5540 USD

Inverse: 1 USD = 0.6435 GBP

Sub-Total: 300 USD = 193.05 GBP

Wire Fee: 14.17 GBP

Total: 207.22 GBP

You can also use ACH/ETF to his account:

Exchange Rate: 1 GBP = 1.5538 USD

Inverse: 1 USD = 0.6436 GBP

Sub-Total: 300 USD = 193.08 GBP

Wire Fee: 0 GBP

Total: 193.08 GBP

There could be extra wire fees for you when you add your GBP account because the system seems to need to know the details of the account before it can give a full quote. It told me there wouldn't be any fee for the wire transfer from GBP to USD but when I added my fiances account as the receiving the fee went up to 14.17. There is no charge to use ACH/ETF to your husband's account but there might be a wire charge on your end.

Sorry for the long post...hopefully it's helpful.
