Sergey had his wallet swiped from him by a pickpocket in Moscow. Fortunately his green card and drivers license were not in it but he did lose his debit card which was our "money transfer" method. We called his bank and cancelled it. A few days later some shop called him and said they found his wallet tossed behind an ATM. No one got any money from his debit card but they got a few rubles he had.

Anyway we got a new card and alla took it to Fedex to send to Sergey. Fedex told her she could not send a CC to Russia. Seems strange. His bank had no problem with it. They told her it was illegal to send CCs from the USA to Russia. ????? Is that so? or is it a Fedex rule?

At any rate, the fee to send the credit card is no more than we will spend in the next few months sending moneygrams, so it is no big deal. He can get his new card when he comes back for the summer. But I am just curious.

Thanks

What about using Ups?

That was kind of the question. If it is "illegal" then UPS is not going to do it either. If it just a Fedex policy then maybe we could. However, we have since decided that since we already sent him some cash by Moneygram ($15 fee) and we will probably only send him money one or two times more before he comes home, it probably would not be worth the $95 they wanted to send it anyway.

I was curious for future reference, for whatever it is worth to me or someone else.

Thanks for the answers

I would send it and not tell them what is included. By pass the front line people... Go online and purchase a lable and leave it at one of the drop boxes.

I tried searching the UPS site and couldn't find anything about shipping credit cards.

It's probably like when I sent wine to my daughter in Massachusetts. UPS said I couldn't sent wine to people in Mass., so I packaged it myself and said it was vinegar. If it broke, the smell would probably have ended up smelling like vinegar from the heat in the vans.

We have been using Western Union with 48 hour delay service. It is much more economical. I sent $600 recently and it only cost $18. It's not necessarily 3% on everything since I just sent my FIL in Russia a $100 for Christmas and the cost was $2.

That might be a cheap option for some.

Except we are sending it ro Russia. It is subject to being opened and checked and IF there is some law against it (in Russia) it could be a big problem for our son. I am not going to risk that for...what? The fee to send it is more than the fee we will spend to send money by Moneygram for the next few months.

Sending it USPS is out of the question as you do not send such things by mail through the Russian mail system, it has about -0- chance of arriving. If you send any such thing it is by Fedex or UPS and for "station pickup" not for delivery at an address.

Thats a good idea, I did not know they had that service. WU is usually SO expensive. I will check that out. WU also has more locations there than Monetgram and Sergey will appreciate that. It is basically an inconvenience for both of us, but not more more than that. Thanks.

Just say it's documents. Put the cc in some other papers, stick them in a security envelope, and send that via fedex. I've had cards sent to me before via fedex and that's what I always have the people sending me them do. Fedex doesn't screen overnight packages and customs won't bother with documents.
