My wife just picked up a part time job today... teaching Vietnamese to kids of Viet Kieu! :P

She was an elementary school teacher in VN, and she really misses it. She's been bummed because it's going to take years to get her teaching credential here.

There's a VN Buddhist temple in our town, and she goes every Sunday. She's been teaching Vietnamese to kids there every week. One of the other teachers was impressed, and offered her a job tutoring some Viet Kieu kids on weekday afternoons. She's really happy!

But how will these kid's parents feel when they come home speaking with a Hue accent? It's very hard for even Viet ppl to understand. (Hue is my favorite city in VN)

Oh, and congratulations to her!

She can speak the northern and southern dialects, but as you say, she speaks with a central accent. I speak very little of the language, but I've heard her switch gears and change to a different dialect when it's obvious someone she's talking to is having a hard time understanding her.

The other teacher who offered her the job is her second cousin, I think. She's not exactly sure where the family tree connects, but she knows they're related and thinks they're cousins. He and his wife live only a few miles away from us. Obviously, they're originally from Hue. Their friends, who will be bringing their kids over for tutoring, are also from Hue, but not related. I think they'll probably want the kids to learn the central dialect since that's where they'll be going when they visit Vietnam, and what they'll be speaking with other family members in the US.

That's awesome that she can speak all 3 dialects. Hue was the first one I learned since I went there in 1999 for an educational trip and they started teaching us. Then when I was in my first church I talked Viet a lot with a God-nephew who had just moved from central VN. Everyone laughed at me for speaking with a Hue accent, since most of the other ppl around spoke with a southern accent. I don't get to meet many ppl from Hue area.

I would love to get Thuy hooked up like that! She has such a great voice and VN pronunciation that many VN frineds of mine have commented on her voice and how well she speaks formal VN... wish there was a VN temple here too... :( Nails is out of the question and wont happen... even though some friends ask her every time we see them... she cant deal with the chemicals or some of the seedy folks working there...

After she has been here a year, she can attend the local votech for free and become a pharmacy tech, CNA, compter tech or a list of other things... we'll see what happens down the road.. she gets so bored some days..

Jim, there are online schools like the one I am going to for an accredited teaching degree, it isnt that expensive, and she can get it done in 4 years or less also check this link out http://www.riosalado.edu/programs/education/postbacc/Pages/In-PersonRequirements.aspx they offer a teaching certificate through Arizona, and they might accept her previous degree where she would only have to do a teaching practium and do their online part. We've talked about it and she wants to go on campus, especially as we're only five minutes from a Cal State campus. We're still trying to figure out if any of her credits will transfer. She's figuring four years, as well. School will keep her busy, but she really misses working, especially with kids. She had her first day of tutoring today and she came home in one of the best moods I've seen her in for some time. She thinks she may go for a daycare license first, and get a part time job in a preschool or daycare while she's going to school.
