The candidates actually took it seriously for the most part but

some said they'd be better off at a company other than GS.

It's a pretty run-of-the mill "team-building" question - I think they

wanted to know if they would ask for help or not without actually

asking them if they were in a seemingly impossible situation at

the office, what would they do?

I like this Google interview question:

"how many basketballs can you fit in this room"

I liked these answers:

A) Instead of working it out, anyone ever replied with something along the lines of: I'm sure you don't need to know how many basketballs can fit in here. Why don't we skip this question and save some time?

B) Between 1 and 1 million basketballs. You did not specify your error tolerance or accuracy requirement. It is always a mistake to jump to conclusions and provide answers without collecting data and doing the backup analysis.
