I had questions like:

Would the Visa CO understand at interview why I have chosen to keep my maiden name? definitely!

Would the Visa CO understand why I have 5 names total if I just added his to all of mine? lol yes

Would my husband (foreigner or not), understand why I am not using his last name professionally and only socially? hmmm maybe? i wonder if it would offend him?

Would the clients or patients know how to find me if I changed my name? they will learn! and plus you'll love telling them on official letterhead about your new life milestone!!!

What would it cost me at the bottom line in time and money? lots!!

What would it cost our marriage, bottom line? ? only you can answer that sugar ;)

Hey sweet thang ;)

Good question! And it comes up a lot in my line of work. I work in IT and project management. There is only one person with my name in this global well known company I work for and that person is me. I like it that way.

HOWEEEEEEEEEVER,

There is no one being on this earth I would rather be attached to or that is more important to me than my fiance. My life starts with my family and the means to strengthening it is my work. I am absolutely positively going to take his name and my colleagues will learn to love and get to know my new name.

Plus, I have 2 brothers who will carry our name...I suppose if my dad didn't have boys with children I would consider keeping my name.

But here's the other thing...I'd have 5 names too, like you Mari! lol

That's just too much. And the look on my fiance's face when I refer myself to his Mrs is so priceless. I would have it no other way. <3

When I was 17 I was working in local gov and i took a payment from Mrs Sidebotham

I said "Thank you Mrs Sidebottom" and she got really offended and said:

" It's SIDDY - BO - THEM !!! " and she strode out in a huff

Luckily I never met Eileen Dover, or Philip McCavity but I did meet Ruby Duberry and she lived in Horsforth

I've chosen to use my husband's name because it's shorter. I used to have three first names (given name), middle name, and a four-syllable last name. Now my last name is just disyllabic. star_smile.gif

I am only a beginner - an apostrophe hawk.

I had a, uh, problematic maiden name (let's just say it wasn't a great name to have in the 80s and leave it at that), so when I got married for the first time, I happily took on my husband's name. I was also pretty much a child bride at the age of barely 23, so I had no reputation to gain or lose. When I remarried, I glommed my second husband's name on to my existing name so I'm now double-barrelled. If I should be so delusional as to go for a third round of nuptials, I'm sticking with this iteration of surname. Nobody likes a triple-barrel.

Let's say, you are a professional woman who is well-established and newly married. Would you change your surname to his?

Or, you're a newly married man and your wife is established in her profession. What would your input be?

I've been thinking about all the formalities from a marriage aspect and a professional aspect. For fun, I even spoke to a couple lawyer girlfriends (one is immigration law, the other is family law).

I had questions like:

  • Would the Visa CO understand at interview why I have chosen to keep my maiden name?
  • Would the Visa CO understand why I have 5 names total if I just added his to all of mine? LOL
  • Would my husband (foreigner or not), understand why I am not using his last name professionally and only socially?
  • Would the clients or patients know how to find me if I changed my name?
  • What would it cost me at the bottom line in time and money?
  • What would it cost our marriage, bottom line?

Here's what the attorney's offered up when I asked them what they would do:

  1. I'm not 20 yrs old anymore.... I am who I am. BTW, You're not 20 yrs old anymore either. (Ha ha ha ha really?)
  2. It's a cultural question. What do you want to do? (LOL of course put it back in my lap)
  3. If you have assets, decide to take his name, you'll have to change all of the documents, unless you want to keep those all to yourself... then, leave them alone. They were yours before you married.
  4. Tell you what, you stay married for ten years and I'll make all the changes on all your papers to his name!
  5. Here, can I buy you a drink? You look confused.

I thought it would interesting to see what the VJ family would say (guys and gals of course!)

Hi Mari, how are you?

I got your message by the way.

I can see you're having a very great discussion here and all of them make a good point.

Well as of the Philippines, we are by culture required to change names after marriage. I will still have to research more why and how it originally started by as far as i remember i think i grew up knowing that filipinos do that.

We though keep our last name to be our middle name once the change is done. and then our kids will carry our last name to be their middle name and then their father's name as the last name.

in cases of keeping last name for professional purpose, like i said they still use the last name as middle name so lets say someone used to be Dr. Mari Lopez, when she gets married she will be Dr. Mari Lopez Garcia..kindna off like that.

when it comes to business enterprises i think some just keep it as it is, some probably would do add the hubby's name if not the wife. with personal assets, some do change it as its automatically considered as conjugal property unless they both signed a pre nuptial agreement ;)
