i personally feel a lot safer having one - as 911 will get me a cop in about 30-45 minutes. things may be different where you live, but that's the reality of where i live.

Response time is a lot better here, but to be perfectly realistic about this, if my home is invaded while I'm upstairs it will take the invaders a lot less time to get upstairs than it will for the cops to get here - even if the cops get here in 3-4 minutes as is the norm here.

So I have decided to booby trap the tiles in the foyer. I will know which ones have the explosives underneath and won't step on them. The home invader won't!

 I have tile in half of my house, that's a spectacular idea. It'll even be safe in a house with children in them.

My idea was more like propping a fan, bucket of tar(not hot, that'd be mean), and feathers up in a trap for invaders. Boy, would they feel foolish.

On a serious note, I sometimes have "what would I do" survival thoughts in my mind. From my house opening up from a sinkhole to other craziness. Where to run, what to get, what to pick up as a weapon(like a table leg?),etc. I hope other people do that too so that I am not too crazy sounding. I'm sure if those things happened, I wouldn't do anything I planned in my mind.

I have always 'gotten' that Slim! The problem is that feeling of power and control may be more illusion than real and may come at a price! But I do acknowledge that for some thoughtful individuals of which I hope you are one, having a weapon may enhance their security to some extent. For many others having weapons in their homes makes them and their loved ones substantially less safe! And to society as a whole, guns come with a terrible price tag!

Stupidity makes people substantially less safe. The inanimate objects they choose to use matter very little.

So I have decided to booby trap the tiles in the foyer. I will know which ones have the explosives underneath and won't step on them. The home invader won't!

Make it just like the Billie Jean video!

It'll even be safe in a house with children in them.

I find it outrageous when people say, "well, guns aren't safe in a house with children." I often wonder if those folks leave their toddlers in running cars or leave power tools plugged in, oven doors open, bathtubs full of water, etc.

The same people that fill their electrical outlets with plastic plugs so kids can't stick forks or those car keys they were just using to drive dad's oldsmobile in are hesitant to accept the fact that not only will a gun not fire without ammo but it's also completely possible to store said inanimate objects in locked childproof containers.

And here's an even bigger concept they fail to grasp.... teaching their kids about guns! They have no problem showing them how to swim and letting them know the pool could be dangerous if misused. Yet leave it to the same folks to say, "oh, well guns are dangerous." Yeah, don't forget to shut the gate, homey.

On a serious note, I sometimes have "what would I do" survival thoughts in my mind. From my house opening up from a sinkhole to other craziness. Where to run, what to get, what to pick up as a weapon(like a table leg?),etc. I hope other people do that too so that I am not too crazy sounding.

As a rational person you should think about risks and dangers in your life and the best way to mitigate them, even if they're only "what if?" scenarios. To not do so is somewhat irresponsible. Folks have no problem investing in a 401k for a "what if" scenario yet think you're weird if you have a go bag.

Don't worry because ultimately, they won't find it as funny when they need you to help their non-prepared a$$es out. I tell people all the time, "hey, I hope I am just being crazy but you know what, if it happens, you'll be the first person asking for some of my crazy pills, won't you?"

I'm sure if those things happened, I wouldn't do anything I planned in my mind.

You have to practice. Plan out what you'd do, go through the motions a few times and before you know it, it's second nature.

This is one of the biggest problems in real life for people having a gun for home protection. Most of us are inherently much more averse to killing someone than the thugs who we may encounter. If you point a gun and hesitate even momentarily firing it that gives an assailant time to use his own weapon on you or even to separate you from your own weapon and shoot you with it. This is not theoretical. It has happened all too frequently. One reason I don't have a weapon in my home is that I know I would probably be one of those that would be so loathe to kill another human that I might also hesitate to fire. I hope that those on here that have weapons to defend home and family know this and are ready to make that split second decision and to make it without mistaking a loved one for an intruder!

It's hard to plan sinkhole collapse motions. Will it open here? there? I am mostly joking but actually we have sinkhole issues here, so it's partially serious. Houses in my town have fallen into sinkholes before, thankfully I don't think anyone has died from it.

The rest hmmm. I know people who have guns for hunting in their house, and 3 little ones, and it makes me nervous. They are careful and everything, I think. I have never held a real gun before, so it's all very unfamiliar to me. But that doesn't mean I want all guns banned.

You can live inside the sinkhole. It's warmer down there, for one. And the additional humidity is great if you wish to grow a vegetable garden.

Well if it's summertime, I hope it's cooler down there. But you are right, I need to think of the positive aspects. Imagine all the vegetables I could grow, organically!!!

Where are you getting these "facts" from? The more you post about gun stuff the more I hear "well on TV it said...."

There are facts out there about armed response. A very simple fact is good training and practice - like in all other things in life - leads to more efficient defense, be that with a gun, a lamp, or just the fists of fury.

Why is it perfectly acceptable for a family with kids to have a rope ladder, a red dot in the window, and practice fire drills yet when the topic of "somehing going bump in the night" comes up all of the sudden the best thing to do is "hope" everything turns out OK?

I know people who have guns for hunting in their house, and 3 little ones, and it makes me nervous.

Why?

They are careful and everything, I think.

So why are the guns "special" in that regard? Are they more dangerous than other inanimate household objects? Do these people not have electric in their home? What about a stove and/or microwave? Are they careful with that stuff too? Did they tell their kids about proper use for that sort of thing?

Why wouldn't they do that with the guns?

I have never held a real gun before, so it's all very unfamiliar to me. But that doesn't mean I want all guns banned.

You should not only hold one, you should head out to the range and learn to fire one. Then, you should own one. Check out this program for a great way to do so - http://www.appleseedinfo.org

I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy.

I just don't see that happening. :P I think I'd rather learn something like how to be a ninja, instead.
