Christina Taylor Green, 9-year-old victim in Tucson shooting, born on 9/11; had passion for politics

One of the six people slain by the Arizona madman was the 9-year-old granddaughter of former Yankees and Mets manager Dallas Green.

Christina Taylor Green, a student at Mesa Verde Elementary School who was born Sept. 11, 2001, attended Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' event to learn about the political system.

Christina was a member of the student government and also loved baseball, horseback riding and swimming.

Christina's father is John Green, Dallas Green's son, who is the East Coast supervisor of amateur scouts for the Los Angeles Dodgers. John Green told the Arizona Star-News that his daughter had developed an interest in politics.

"She was a good speaker. I could have easily seen her as a politician," he said.

Christina's mother, Roxanna, said, "She was all about helping people and being involved. It's so tragic. She went to learn today, and then someone with so much hatred in their heart took the lives of innocent people."

Dallas Green, now 76, managed the Yankees for three-quarters of the season in 1989 until he was abruptly fired by George Steinbrenner at a Detroit hotel while the Bombers were in town to play the Tigers.

Green had butted heads with Steinbrenner after famously calling him "Manager George." Green also managed the Mets in 1993-1996 before being replaced by Bobby Valentine.

Green managed the Phillies to a 1980 World Series championship and is now an adviser to the Phillies. He was honored with a spot on the Phillies Wall of Fame in 2006. He currently lives in Newark, Del.

A neighbor invited Christina to Giffords' event, her uncle said.

"She was real special and real sweet," Christina's uncle, Greg Segalini, told The Arizona Republic.

The other dead were identified as Federal Judge John Roll, Pastor Dorwin Stoddard, 75, of Mountain Ave. Church of Christ, Gabe Zimmerman, 30, an aide to the congresswoman, Dorothy Morris, 76, and Phyllis Scheck, 79.

How crazy is it that she was born on 9/11?? By the way, are there any reports to the security at the event? Were there no metal detectors? Back in the 2008 election cycle, I went to a Ron Paul rally in SoCal and was surprised that there was very little security.

If I read correct info yesterday, it took like 15-20 minutes for the police to get there and 30 for the medics.

Not all of these people will get or even deserve primaries, but this vote certainly puts a bulls eye on their district. If we can field enough serious challengers, and if we repeat the Donna Edwards and Joe Lieberman stories a few more times, well then, our elected officials might have no choice but to be more responsive. Because if we show them that their AT&T lobbyist buddies can't save their jobs, they'll pay more attention to those who can.

What kind of security do you expect at a common congressionial member event at a Safeway?

Typically, there's no security on the level of Secret Service guarding the president for member of Congress. Presidential candidates don't get the Secret Service protection until they're are nominated. Obama did because of another MLK and Clinton did as a former First Lady. I saw Bush and McCain running in 2000 and they had no heavy security at their rallies.
