I am old enough and I lived in a southern State with Jim Crow laws to boot. Nothing Oprah or any person can do now can change what happened then, nor "correct it" Jim Crow was a Democrat, you know, as were all the other segregationists and anti-civil rights people.

The civil rights act was followed with the immigration reform of 1965 that made it easier for people to get away with being here illegally. The oppressed and discriminated-against black people who had filled the need of slaves at the time, were replaced by oppressed and discriminated-against brown people who still fill those roles and the government does nothing to end slavery. The requirement to pay people equally, for example, did not result in higher paying jobs for blacks, it resulted in unemployment and welfare lives for blacks and underpaid jobs for illegal immigrants.

The government eliminated the LAWS oppressing black people and replaced them with "programs" to oppress black people. If you are against those programs, they say you are "racist". Brilliant.

Those same segregationists and anti-civil rights people are probably all now Republicans after Reagan's southern strategy during his election campaigns.

Please explain how immigration reform in 1965 made it easier for people to get away with being here illegally.

Thats speculation. It is not speculation that the segregationsits were Democrats. Jim Crow, George Wallace, Bull Connor...have I hit on any converted Republicans yet?

The immigration reform act of 1965 made the process of deportation much more difficult and is the reason now that most illegal immigrants are arrested and then released on their own recognizance to come back to a deportation hearing.

Illegal aliens will be a problem UNTIL we punish the people that reward them financially to be here. When they can make no money because no one will dare to hire them...then they will go away and stop being abused and exploited for profit.

Minimum wage, worker protection EEOC rules are for everyone, not just white people.

I can't name specific individuals but I think it is pretty common knowledge that the Republican party succeeded in converting southern democrats who were anti civil rights. That is why the South is dominated by "Red" states.

Southern Strategy

SO lets put this all together, Reagan 15 yrs after the Civil Rights act was passed swooped into the south and extracted all the "bad" democrats from the Party, leaving the Pure ones to form what we now know as the Democrat party?

It has a nice simple ring to it but the truth is: By 1980 the Democrat party lost those votes and people to social issues such as gun control, Abortion, forced bussing and those issues.

Tell you what, why don't you post one clip of Reagan campaigning on any theme that would make long lost Klansman rally too.

Post one speech, ...one platform, one campaign promise or even any part of Reagan's past

which would cause this stampede of bad Democrats ..to find hope in him as one who would not be fair to all, regardless of color.

If you are going to say racists switched from the Dem party to Republican you ought to have more than rumors as evidence. Was it/is it common knowledge that the Democrats filibustered civil rights and voting rights? That the Democrat party had a platform of supporting stetes rights (slavery) and it was the Republican party that fought against slavery? Was it/is it common knowledge Martin Muther King Jr was a Republican?

I grew up in Texas in the 50s and 60s. I KNOW what being a southern Democrat meant and still does to a lot of people.

Really? Until 1980 it was called the "solid south" as it always went for Democrats and to this day the legislatures are dominated by Democrats. Carter ruined that on a national level only. Racists changed their tactic and went from outward oppression to the racism of low expectations. Welfare is as responsible for enslaving people as plantations ever were and welfare is less compassionate.

Two things, first what do you know about Nixon's 'southern strategy'? Second, what was the significance of Reagan announcing his run in Philadelphia, Mississippi? What else is that town known for?

Jim Crow was a Democrat, you know,

No, actually I don't know.

Because Jim Crow was not/is not a person. Jim Crow refers to the segregationist laws of the South. The term comes from the minstrel shows of the era.

Normally I wouldn't bother commenting on one of these moronic threads, but since you make such a point of targeting repeatedly a VJ poster on the subject of the timeline of the French and US Revolutions, I'll make a point from now on of deriding the ignorance of one who actually thinks Jim Crow was a live human being in the annals of history.

A simple mistake? Sure, we're all entitled to making human errors. But one as perfect and infallible as you? For shame.

I was born in 1956 in Dallas, TX and have lived there or in one of its suburbs all my life, so I also KNOW what it is like to have grown in a Southern state during the time before and after the passage of the Civil Rights act. Being a white Hispanic and growing up in West Dallas, one of the poorest areas of town, I experienced the racism. I remember seeing the blacks having to ride in the back of the buses. I remember seeing the white only restrooms and water fountains. I remember having to go to a different elementary school after the schools were desegregated. I remember being bused while in high school to satisfy the court ordered desegregation of the Dallas Independent School district. Even after I started working for the Federal Government in 1974 I remember seeing vestiges of the good ole boy mentality when it came time to promote people. So please don't think you know more than I do about growing up in the South.

If you read the Wikipedia link you will see mentioned that the Southern Strategy actually started with Richard Nixon.

I never said I did.

I said it was Democrats that filibustered civil rights and voting rights. I said it was Democrats that stood with armed troops on the steps of public universities to prevent blacks from going there. It was Democrats that fought against bussing. It was Democrats that implemented welfare to enslave blacks and keep them in West Dallas and Freedman's town just north of downtown. (I think Freedmans town got more or less torn down after the Crescent complex was developed, but some of it may still be there...you know where it is) It is why they don't live in Highland Park. They have been kept where they were wanted to be kept by plan.

I get your point but my counterpoint is that those same Democrats probably converted to Republicans because of their anti civil rights views.

If there is truth to it....

Do you think they were disappointed?

As president, Reagan implemented sweeping new political and economic initiatives. His supply-side economic policies, dubbed "Reaganomics," advocated controlling the money supply to reduce inflation, and spurring economic growth by reducing tax rates, government regulation of the economy, and certain types of government spending. In his first term he survived an assassination attempt, took a hard line against labor unions, and ordered military actions in Grenada. He was reelected in a landslide in 1984, proclaiming it was "Morning in America". His second term was primarily marked by foreign matters, such as the ending of the Cold War, the bombing of Libya, and the revelation of the Iran-Contra affair. Publicly describing the Soviet Union as an "evil empire,"[2] he supported anti-Communist movements worldwide and spent his first term forgoing the strategy of détente by ordering a massive military buildup in an arms race with the USSR. Reagan negotiated with Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev, culminating in the INF Treaty and the decrease of both countries' nuclear arsenals.

Reagan left office in 1989. In 1994, the former president disclosed that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease earlier in the year; he died ten years later at the age of 93. He ranks highly in public opinion polls of U.S. Presidents, and is a conservative icon.

I don't know. You'd have to ask them. I didn't vote for Reagan.

In other words you can't find one thing which would draw people to Reagan for racial motives.

Atts what I thought.

Think about that next time you suggest the Democratic party somehow purged it's self onto Reagan.
