U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona was shot in the head outside a grocery store in Tucson while holding a public event, Arizona Public Media reported Saturday.

The Democrat, who was re-elected to her third term in November, was hosting a "Congress on Your Corner" event at the Safeway in northwest Tucson when a gunman ran up and started shooting, according to Peter Michaels, news director of Arizona Public Media.

At least nine other people, including members of her staff, were hurt. Giffords was transported to University Medical Center in Tucson. Her condition was not immediately known.

Pima Sheriff's: Rep. Giffords injured at shooting in Tucson

TUCSON, AZ (KOLD)- At least 3 people have been shot at a Congress on Your Corner event held by Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords Saturday morning.

It happened just after 10 a.m. at the Safeway on Ina and Oracle, Pima County Sheriff's Department spokesman Jason Ogan said.

There is no word on if Congresswoman Giffords was shot, but Ogan has confirmed she has been injured.

(Reuters) - Representative Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona was shot in the head while holding a public event in Tucson, Fox News and National Public Radio reported on Saturday.

Fox said 11 other people were shot when an unidentified gunman ran up and began shooting indiscriminately as Giffords addressed supporters.

Giffords was shot point blank in the head, Fox said.

The network said the gunman was in custody.

Giffords, 40, a Democrat, is married to U.S. astronaut Mark Kelly. She took office in January 2007, emphasizing issues such as immigration reform, embryonic stem-cell research, alternative energy sources and a higher minimum wage.

I was just browsing freerepublic- consensus there is that libruls did this because she was a blue dog.

everyone needs to stop jumping to conclusions. if she was shot in the head at point blank range (like fnc is reporting) then this was a hit and the perp may be more than happy to tell the world why he (i assume he) did it.

MSNBC has an "eye witness" who heard the shooting but didn't actually see it. He says he heard 15-20 shots, saw people running away and screaming.

And he says he saw three bodies covered in sheets.

Yahoo is reporting that she was "fatally shot".

Representative Gabrielle Giffords was fatally shot during a public appearance on Saturday, National Public Radio said.

NPR said a gunman ran up to Giffords, 40, a Democrat, and opened fire. The suspect was taken into custody, NPR said.

Media reports said about a dozen other people also were shot.
