you know...i appreciate anyone who can trade stocks and be in that bussines! Is that like brokers? i heard you can make sooo much money doing that!!but you also have to be very good! i wish i would have the brains to do that!

To be honest, the main reason(and i know it's the wrong reason) why i want to pursue a medical career is mostly for it's longevity and the fact that it's a more secure environment than other careers...

People say you should do what you enjoy...problem is i don't really think i enjoy anything in particular(except maybe winning the loto and beeing a house wife  )SO since there is nothing that i would really enjoy doing..might as well get into something practical...like health care.

that is such a big coincidence that your grandparents and also her granparents owned an agency!! that's so cool!

You can also visit a career center and they would give you some tests/questionaires and based on that they would assist you in identifying the jobs that you might enjoy doing.

hmmm....iuliana that is very interesting, i would assume i would have to wait for my ead to arrive so i can get my ssn before i do any of that, right?

i am curious how easy it is to get a student loan?

as i was looking for radiology schools here close to where i live, and bummer the only one that has this program requires me to be in a biology class for one year..then another 2 years for the actuall radiology...so 3 years?? might as well get a collage degree then.

SO i think i will look into my second choice-ocupational therapist program.

I applied to some jobs on craigs's list just to see where i stand and how easy it is to get a job...another bummer...i got 2 e-mails(scam) they wanted me to do my credit report... so obviously it was just a scam... it's hard to get a job thses days... :(

thanks again for sharing your knowledge with me! :)

If all you will be doing is to get your skills evaluated, I don't think you would need an EAD or SSN for that.

There is no harm in beginning your job search without an EAD...just remember you cannot accept job offers until your EAD card is in your hands.

You would only qualify for a student loan once you have your GC and SSN...same thing with grants. Personally, grants would be better because you do not have to pay them back...and there are a lot of grants for minority women...depending on your country of origin or the program you wish to pursue.

I got dinged by one of those craigslist ads myself...yes, the job hunt is very stressful...hope we all have lots of luck with it someday!

1.Student loans could be obtained only if you have your GC or you are a USC. Grants/Scholarship might be available as well, depending on what school/university and program you are going to apply for. The good thing is - there are school officials who provide assistance in regards to your fianancial aid options, so you are not alone in this process.

2. A visit to a career center could be done anytime. You will only learn what kind of jobs you might enjoy doing, in case you don;t know what you are looking for and what career path you should pursue.

3.You may accept a job as soon as you have your EAD in your hands. :star:

she won't need to do any of these if she becomes an LPR.

That is a incorrect answer

It will all depend upon the college and thier requirments, I would say there is a good chance she will have to take TOEFL, but it's easy

You are right.

Sounds about right. However, most community colleges do NOT require TOEFL score, you'll take their placement test (reading, writing, math) and it'll determine your math level, and also whether or not you need to take some reading class before going any further. So you kinda know where to start from.

Most four-yr colleges/universities, on the other hand, require you to take TOEFL.

This is based on my personal experience. I have a BA majoring Communications (from my home country Indonesia) and was considering to go to either graduate school or nursing school. Applied to a local state university for two grad programs, took their institutional TOEFL, and got accepted in both. But I changed my mind and am currently working on my nursing prerequiste courses at a local community college. Only have two more classes to do and been getting straight A's. As long as you have a strong foundation in English, math and other basic science subjects you should be ok. Good luck! :)

I was debating either to do ocupational therspist or nursing, but i was never really good at chemistry, and i am not sure if nursing requires chemistry. Also, i heard you have to get your RN because not a lot of people hire CNA's. I heard it's hard to het your RN, it takes 4 years, and it is not easy AT ALL.

I have been thinking...AND ..if i end up going back to school it will have to be something really good where the job market is up and coming, that will also give me a job almos right away, i don't want to get into debt and still going back to square one: having a hard time finding a job. ALSO, i have some friends that have a collage degree...and they make anywhere from $8-14 an hour  . I hate to say this but it's almost no point to go to school for 4 years get yourself into debt for a long time, just to make the same amount of money as the guy without the degree. And i am saying this because this is america...the land where without a degree you can make 6 figures a year. If you are smart you can promote and possibly make more money that even somone with a masters degree.

I hate to sound materialistic, but now days the way this world works we are forced to focus on more practical profesions rather than doing somethign we love, unfortunatelly that's a luxury that most of us don't have.

There are different routes to become a RN--ADN takes takes around 3 by the tiem you get the pre-course courses completed! Many just require a basic chem course, i suck at Chemistry but managed to get A's!! Starting wage for a RN, ADn or BSn varies from state to State. In the Dc area one can expect around $25 an hr + shift differential to start. Easy make $60,000 a yr working 3 --12 hr shifts a week. Depending on what kind of floor you work on--your super busy!! 12 hrs fly by in no time + and - of all jobs!! And yep school can be difficult, just requires effort. But there are many different fields of nursing to go into and once you have experience, can pretty much get a job anywhere. allnurses.com is a decent site

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Shooting for RN myself, and planning to get the BSN (long term, I hope to be a nurse practitioner. Hopefully by the age of 40! -I am turning 26 this year).

The prerequisite courses vary per college, so you might want to check with the college/university you're planning to apply at. Nursing school is a very competitive so just make sure you get the perfect score in order to get in -at least that's my attitude. I guess a few B's won't hurt -depending on how high the scores of other applicants.

Nursing is a very rewarding field. You should give it some thoughts! Perhaps all you need to do is just go ahead take the prerequisites and see how it goes for you. Well, good luck with whatever path you'll take :)

Oh, forgot to address the chemistry course. You may only be required to take "Introduction to Chemistry" (in my college, it falls under course code 'Chem 121'). Most associate nursing program only requires you to take that. And after you're done with the associate, you can always transfer to a four-year college/university get the BSN if you wish so. Most four-year colleges/universities offer bachelor's in nursing (BSN), if you want to go straight without doing a transfer. Again, make sure you check with the school for the prerequisites.

Many ways to go--Many go the ADn route--then continue on with the BSN--why??? ADN is cheaper AND then many employers pay for ur education--wel part of it--so much a yr!! $$$ thats out of their pocket, not yours!! And the pay difference between an ADN and BSN is nothing to very little! There are some super $$$$ schools out their! Do your research, there are many great ADN programs out here at a fraction of the cost--then let ur employer pick up the BSN, MSN cost! AND their is a high burnout of nurses!! SOOOO many students think they are going to save the world, going to love nursing, i'm going to do this, going to do that---then reality sits in----they hate it!! Just saying! Thanks for the comment. I'm seeking the BSN because I hope to go to a nursing graduate program later. That simply explains why. That's very true that nursing is not for everyone, and that implies in everything else as well :). Was only offering my insight to the Romanian lady who's trying to decide on a school major that might suit her.

Nursing isn't for everyone!! I could go on and on,lol off to work!
