Birth Certificate - how long is it valid for?

Hello Peeps again.

It's taking me a while to file cos my mother in law cannot find his son's tax return for the year 2007 (I know, she files for him ) and my birth certificate that I got in Italy before I left to come here is already 3 months old. Will that be a problem?

Your BC is good forever! We submitted a copy of mine that was made when I was 4 years old.

Also, you don't need to submit his 2007 tax return unless you want to send them in. You have a choice of submitting either the previous year's taxes, OR the last three years'. If you really want to send in the 2007, you can also call IRS and request a tax transcript for that year. Good luck!

Birth certs are valid until the person dies, then it is replaced by a death cert.

Unless you are reborn , the BC is good forever because you are only born once.

Well, thanks for that. When I had to go to Paris for the interview it was such a big deal that the BC is not older than 3 months. The lady who took all my documents even told me "you want to go back to Italy before you go the States and get another one of these"..Pfff...

I know about the tax return thing, I am not submitting them all but they still want you to let them know how much he's made in 2007 and that's written on his tax return but I guess I'll ask mom Mom in Law to call IRS and get a transcript (btw, I dont know what all these things are, I guess I'll learn this April when I file for my husband ).

I can't imagine why she would tell you that. There's nothing on a birth certificate that should ever change. There's no reason why a birth certificate would ever become invalid.

It is because in France they put the mentions single, married, divorce, deceased... on the birth certificate. So it is to verify that you are not already married or dead to prevent fraud and/or identity theft.

Well, my BC is Italian actually (cos I am Italian but was living in France) and it does not read anything about my actual status (cos we're talking about the Copie Integrale de l'Acte de Naissance here) so I really do not know why they make such a fuss about its validity!

This 3 month rule is a pain in the a** for me too. I just realized I'll need another one (less than 3 month old of course) to transcript my wedding with the French administration.
