Happy New Year Everyone!!!

I just wanna ask regarding the proof of income. We will be having a Co-Sponsor since my US Fiancee is a full-time student. Would the SSDI + Retirement Benefits be an enough proof? We don't have an income Tax returns from our Co-sponsor, would that be fine? His total earnings almost reach $40K per year, that is the Social security disability Income and Retirement Benefits. I am his only dependent. I got a letter from him also stating his willingness to Sponsor us.

I would appreciate for your responses... :)

Sure but include a statement explaining why the sponsor is NOT REQUIRED to file tax returns. Benefits are not proof. Statements of benefits are "documentation" of income.

Hi Mae! My fiance is on SSDI actually. You need his Notice of Award from Social Security Administration. And also a bank statement where they deposit the money from SSDI and also copies of his cheques. And yes the statement why he's exempted to file a tax. Godbless us!!!

Thank you Sir for the response. Our Co-sponsor is not comfortable of giving his income tax returns. But if in case it is really needed or they would really ask for it then we don't have any choice but to ask that to him. But I just hope were good with that.

Then you're going to have a problem when it comes time to submit a green card application. The consulate has some discretion with an I-134, and they have the option of accepting it without a copy of the sponsor's tax return. There is no such discretion with an I-864, which must be submitted with the green card application. The sponsor must submit either the most recent year's tax return or IRS transcript of the return, or a letter explaining why they were not required to file a tax return. They can't submit a letter saying they filed a tax return but don't feel comfortable submitting it. They would be rejected as a sponsor, and you wouldn't be able to get a green card.

It would be better if you explained these details to your sponsor now so that you're not hit with any surprises later. If he filed a tax return then he should submit either a copy of it or an IRS transcript of it. If he won't then the consulate may refuse to accept his I-134.

Others really consider it as confidential but I hope he will understand. Maybe you should explain to him nicely.

Exactly. Lots of things about the process are uncomfortable. Join the club.

Yes I mean we would understand his reasons. We are even thankful to him because he is sponsoring us and that's already a big favor we asked. Thank you guys for the insights. I'm sure we could find a way and I hope everything will go through smoothly. Thank you so much once again. Have a Good Day!!!

Hello SimplyMacy, I'll be having my interview soon and I'd like to get some info from you since my fiance is getting SSDI as well. Did the consul ask for an explanation or any proof of your fiance's medical condition? About the tax exemption statement, do you have like a form or maybe a template for that, or it's in a letter format only? Hope to hear from you. Thanks
