His civil rights are being violated.

No .. the police and KKK are both organizations.. its a conflict of interest.. he has to have a sound mind to make the right judgements and the KKK are known to not have sound minds.. The point is he can be a White Supremist.. they don't care.. but he can't be part of the organization.

Being part of the Klan doesn't make him an azzhole...him being a racist does. See where I'm differentiating

both things make him an arsehole.. joining the klan and being a racist..

I'd much rather him be the stupid azzhole that joins the Klan instead of secretly being a racist. Let everyone know what he is, instead of him looking like 'man of the year' or summat.

NOW IF the job has a specific clause that says he can't be a part of things like this, then fine...deffo fire him. But I do think it's a grey area if not.

Everyone please understand, I am not backing this guy's corner and saying it's cool he's a racist...please understand that!

We know Lisa.. its just difference of oppinion .. I think people deserve rights .. I truly do but the second you join a "hate organization" I think you give up some of those rights.. same with criminals.. second you commit a crime .. you give up some rights... Where as others... such as yourself agree everyone has rights.. .. I guess just be glad I am not a police office, judge, or anyone of power.. Muhahahaha

No, don't fire the guy. Put his face in the paper and on TV, then put him on fcuking foot patrol in the hood. ;)

Funny and yet so wrong in many ways

Hehehe I think it's funny and... ok it's not even wrong at all. I hope this is the solution they come to.

The reality is that racism has historically been institutionalized in many police departments. LAPD, for example, under Chief Gates was known to single out young black males and harass or beat them without provocation. That was part of the build up of tension between the police and communities like Compton which exploded into the riots after the Rodney King trial. That bittertaste and distrust towards police officers lingers - very difficult to remove. There's still plenty of racists that happen to be police officers - I think that any form of racism should not be tolerated including being associated with a known racist organization such as the KKK.

Check their record, Charles. You'd be surprised as to when they stood up for people's rights.

all nice and wonderful, i still doubt they will show up. it's one thing to affirm a mayor supporting such, it's another to defend a person.

His tough on crime rhetoric is popular but I think he's too focused on the punishment rather than on making sure justice is served. Should we differentiate criminal behavior? The popular attitude nowadays is whoever we deem as criminal is below human. We now have about 2 million of these criminals in prison - no other society in human history has imprisoned so many of its own citizens. In the last 10 years, prisons have become a huge private enterprise that is highly profitable. There is definitely a conflict of interest...

The prison industry complex is one of the fastest-growing industries in the United States and its investors are on Wall Street. "This multimillion-dollar industry has its own trade exhibitions, conventions, websites, and mail-order/Internet catalogs. It also has direct advertising campaigns, architecture companies, construction companies, investment houses on Wall Street, plumbing supply companies, food supply companies, armed security, and padded cells in a large variety of colors."

CRIME GOES DOWN, JAIL POPULATION GOES UP

According to reports by human rights organizations, these are the factors that increase the profit potential for those who invest in the prison industry complex:

• Jailing persons convicted of non-violent crimes, and long prison sentences for possession of microscopic quantities of illegal drugs. Federal law stipulates five years’ imprisonment without possibility of parole for possession of 5 grams of crack or 3.5 ounces of heroin, and 10 years for possession of less than 2 ounces of rock-cocaine or crack. A sentence of 5 years for cocaine powder requires possession of 500 grams – 100 times more than the quantity of rock cocaine for the same sentence. Most of those who use cocaine powder are white, middle-class or rich people, while mostly Blacks and Latinos use rock cocaine. In Texas, a person may be sentenced for up to two years’ imprisonment for possessing 4 ounces of marijuana. Here in New York, the 1973 Nelson Rockefeller anti-drug law provides for a mandatory prison sentence of 15 years to life for possession of 4 ounces of any illegal drug.

• The passage in 13 states of the "three strikes" laws (life in prison after being convicted of three felonies), made it necessary to build 20 new federal prisons. One of the most disturbing cases resulting from this measure was that of a prisoner who for stealing a car and two bicycles received three 25-year sentences.

• Longer sentences.

• The passage of laws that require minimum sentencing, without regard for circumstances.

• A large expansion of work by prisoners creating profits that motivate the incarceration of more people for longer periods of time.

• More punishment of prisoners, so as to lengthen their sentences.
