1) Don't lose your Green Card

2) If you lose your Green Card nonetheless, you'll have to go to the US Embassy or Consulate next to your location and get travel papers back to the US. Better put a copy of your Green Card in a safe place, and another one in another safe place when you travel.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

You can always schedule an info-pass appointment and see if they will stamp passport, I know a few that had this done when in removal of conditions, sometimes overzealous airline officials dont accept the extension letter in place of green-card.

Other option would be to visit US consulate that has a DHS office and see about getting a "transportation Leter"

Considering the current state of turmoil in that region, I would hate to have to explain how I lost my green card. If the card is " lost or stolen " I hope someone has the common-sense to red-flag the green card before it can be used for illegal entry in a terrorist attack! If you are worried about losing your green card, make a color copy of it that is legible and carry that in a safe place on your person! Have a safe trip!:D

Make a special pocket in your undergarments if you have to but do NOT lose your green card while outside the USA. It's not the end of the world but just might feel like it for a while, in your bank account if nothing else.

I know somebody who lost three passports in the Philippines over a four year period. His passport was revoked and he was sent back to the USA. It will take him a year or two to qualify for another passport.

Losing a green card is not much different but the suspicion level is elevated for and LPR compared to a USC.

My wife and daughter's green cards have been scanned front and back and saved on a backup server in addition to multiple color copies on paper.

Even though you feel confident you will not lose the stamped passport, I would make copies of the biographic pages in the passport also!

Make a copy of your green card and keep it in a separate place - in your luggage in the hotel or wherever it is you are staying. Guard your green card very carefully - and Pushbrk gave you some good ideas about how - but if anything did happen to it, you would have to travel to the nearest US Consulate, advise them that you have lost the Green Card or it has been stolen, and apply for a Transportation letter to allow your return to the US. It may or may not be granted, depending on the circumstances.

First, you will need to report the loss/theft to the police and get a police report. Second you will need to go to the nearest US Consulate and apply for a Transportation or Boarding letter. To get this you will need proof of your identity (passport) - provide proof of your permanent Residency status (the copy of your green card) - proof of its loss or theft (the police report) - proof that you have not been outside of the US for over a year (copy of your flight itinerary/boarding passes/plane tickets showing when you left the US), - 2 to 4 passport sized photographs (varies from Consulate to Consulate) - a filing fee which seems to vary from Consulate to Consulate as well but is generally around $165 which is non-refundable even if the letter is denied, and some Consulates also have a Consulate specific form for a Lost/Stolen Green card which needs to be completed. The form requires information like: last name, first name, middle name, all aliases and other names used, name used to enter the US, A #, date and place of birth, visa classification used for admission to the US; date and place of admission to the US, how and when you lost your green card; where you last lived in the US; when you last left the US; where you last left the US, address of where you are staying in XX country, date of anticipated return to the US, father's name and mother's name, etc. The letter if it is issued may be valid anywhere from 1 week to 1 month - again it apparently varies based upon Consulate - and may take up to several days to produce as the Consulate needs to verify the information and check with USCIS. Most Consulates only accept applications during regular working hours or at specific times allowed for walk-in appointments - so no weekend or holiday processing.

If you receive the letter, it is good for a one time entry to the US and boarding of a flight to take you there. After you return to the US you need to file for a replacement green card - which is pricey.

So, the best advice - don't lose your green card.

I dont think they will stamp your passport when you have a green card, just because you are worried that you may lose it abroad. I found this for you so to know what you will have to do when you lose your card (you wont lose it): http://www.***removed***....ion-letter.html
