Kids these days ...

Police in Boise, Idaho, arrested a 68-year-old man on Tuesday for reportedly punching a 15-year-old boy who refused to turn off his iPhone on a flight.

"He punched him so hard there was a mark on the teen's arm," Lt. Kent Lipple told Boise's KBOI2.com.

The teenager, on a Las Vegas-to-Boise flight operated by Southwest, was playing games and listening to music, police say, when flight attendants told passengers to power down electronic devices.

Russell Miller, witnesses said, became angry that the teen didn't respond.

After the incident, pilots contacted air-traffic control, who requested that police officers be waiting at the gate upon arrival.

Miller was charged with misdemeanor battery and booked in jail.

When I used to travel to work on the "commuter train" you could hear a pin drop and

many of these A-holes with $500 suits would practically shout at the top of their

lungs into their cells so everybody could hear "No, we won't give it up for less than

$5Million!"' and other such horseykrap.

Now that I travel on the subway, it's so noisy that if there are 10 people talking

loudly into their cell phones I can't hear a damn thing they're saying.

It's just the holy-rollers who want to save car #74593 for "Jeezus" that are impossible to stand.

I guess the teen on the airplane putting the passengers and crew at risk by operating his cellular device

was only fooling around and not posing a serious "terrorist threat," but tell that to the ex-marine? that

slugged him.

PART 22—PUBLIC MOBILE SERVICES

Subpart H—Cellular Radiotelephone Service

Browse Previous | Browse Next

§ 22.925 Prohibition on airborne operation of cellular telephones.

Cellular telephones installed in or carried aboard airplanes, balloons or any other type of aircraft must not be operated while such aircraft are airborne (not touching the ground). When any aircraft leaves the ground, all cellular telephones on board that aircraft must be turned off. The following notice must be posted on or near each cellular telephone installed in any aircraft:

“The use of cellular telephones while this aircraft is airborne is prohibited by FCC rules, and the violation of this rule could result in suspension of service and/or a fine. The use of cellular telephones while this aircraft is on the ground is subject to FAA regulations.”

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Operating a cell phone on a flight does not put passengers and crew at risk.

It was only not a serious risk with 20-20 hindsight. If you've ever been on a customs

line at an airport (JFK) and seen someone using a cell phone within the airport

then you'll see security shout down that individual in a highly menacing fashion

until he/she turns it off. If you've seen the "Hurt Locker" you wold know what cell

phones can do. The fact that we all carry them and use them innocently means

nothing to security officers.

The crotchety old guy with a short temper would have been a hero if his target

was proven to have intended to use the cell phone to do harm. The only justification

for taking "the law" into your own hands is to avert a clear and present danger

and for him this danger appeared to be in his mind only; I think both should have

been charged. Not charging the kid "because he was young and stupid" doesn't

make sense to me either, because he was old enough to know better.

Cell phones have never caused a plane to go down. There is no proof that a cell phone can cause anything other than a compass malfunction on a plane, which should not cause any competent pilot a problem. If cell phones were so dangerous, they would not allow passengers to carry them on board.

Cell Phones on Planes

Myth: Cellphones don't interfere with plane instrumentation -- it's a conspiracy to get passengers to pay the higher priced in-flight phones.

Result: Using a faraday cage to block outside interference, the MythBusters set up a few common instruments from jetliners inside while using a cellphone. At 800-900MHz (a common cellphone bandwidth frequencies), there's definite interference on some of the aircraft instrumentation. Because of federal law, they can't test in the air, though they're able to do so on a grounded private plane., and the tests there show no interference at all. The MythBusters call the conspiracy busted because they believe the airlines are simply not taking any chances with cellphones, since new ones with new frequencies are coming out every day.

http://www.tvsquad.com/2006/03/20/mythbusters-cell-phones-on-planes/

busted The final explanation is that, even though the airplanes appear to be well-shielded against cellphone interference, there are so many different electronics in a cockpit, as well as so many different cellphones constantly coming out, the FAA doesn't want to do the necessary testing.

huh? how is that different from what I posted? ..lol

You posted that the myth was "Cellphones don't interfere with plane instrumentation". The myth was actually "Cellphones do interfere with plane instrumentation".
