This article highlights the cultural differences in how engagement is perceived. Is it when you propose? give someone a ring? When you tell the folks? When the parents meet eachother? When you convert? Thought it was very interesting and relevant to many particularly as regards the cultural expectations in the foreign community.

I really enjoyed this article. I encountered similar confusion with my fiance. Being a Haitian-American born here in the US my idea of getting and being engaged has slightly different from my Haiti born fiance. I imagined him getting down on one knee and proposing (just like in the movies). But imagine my surprise when instead of getting down on one knee he and his family prepared an amazing engagement party with close family and friends. There was prayer and he presented me with a gorgeous ring the rest is history. I wouldn't change a thing.

We pretty much knew we were getting married when we started dating in Sept '08, but it took us until June 2010 to make it "facebook official" and until October 2010 to get a ring. Neither of us remembers a specific conversation where we "decided" to get married, it was sort of just understood. :D

It wasn't really a cultural difference, although it was funny to see everyone take the facebook change so seriously when we had already been planning a wedding for months. And of course, he hadn't actually proposed, so I had to explain that to a lot of people.
