K-1 Interview questions in Montreal.

We've just gotten the letter telling us to book our appointment, and I have a few questions. I posted this over on the K-1 board too, and was told to give it a try here.

One of the forms I sent in said it must include my birth certificate, police check, etc., so I sent in the originals with it. But it says I need the originals for my interview as well. Was that completely stupid of me? Will I be able to get those back? My police check took 5 weeks, I don't have time to get another, and I really don't want to be screwed. I have copies, but will that be enough for the interview?

If anyone has gone through the Montreal consulate, how long after being approved does it actually take to be able to enter the US? My fiance can only get a limited amount of time off work, and if we can have a rough estimate, it would be very helpful.

Thank you in advance for any advice or any directions to somewhere I can find the answers.

I know the process for the interview has changed recently, so maybe the way I did things is no longer. In my case, all I had to do was mail in a checklist saying that I had the required forms (birth certificate, police check...) but I didn't have to mail them in. When I went to the interview, I brought the originals and kept copies for myself. Again, maybe the process has changed, even though my interview was this October. Not sure what you should do if you weren't supposed to mail in the originals, but what I do know is the forms that I did have to mail in prior to my interview were at the consulate and I saw them when the clerk was checking them in front of me.

You know at the interview if you have been approved for your visa or not but you still have to get your passport back. The visa will be in your passport. In my case, I got my visa just a few days after the interview. However, from what I've been reading on VJ, it sometimes takes longer. Once you have the visa in your passport, you can enter the US. I had my interview on the 20th of October and technically could have entered the US on the 23rd.

Hope that helps!

Okay, thank you! Does anyone know for sure if they'll have it all at the interview? Cause if they have the originals, I should be good right?

You will need to keep your originals, You will need an original birth cert in the US for some things.

At the interview ask if you can have the originals back, they will make copys and keep the copys and return the originals.

For packet 3, you actually send the check list AND some Department of State (DS) forms. So be prepared for that. They took me about an hour to fill out, but I was doing it very quickly.

Met: December 2009

Married: April 2015

Received CR-1 visa: February 2017

POE (as IR-1): April 2017

They RFE'd me over the last few months, wanting ALL original documents, I had previously sent them copies and such. I don't know why, but they wanted original BC..original marriage lic..everything.I was kind of perplexed. Anyways, when I get my interview scheduled, I'm just taking my med report, pictures, and passport. That's all I have original..they have everything else.

IR/CR-1 require original documents.

K-1 do not require originals only at the interview.
