We've been married since 2004 and our laziness is embarrasing. My wife's Kyrgyz passport expired back in 2007. She received an extension at the time and now that expires 12/31. The Kyrgyz embassy doesn't do jack by mail nowadays even though they processed the extension w/ payment by mail back in 2007. No one is being understanding and the guy on the phone insists that we fly cross country to file for a new passport. It makes no sense to visit DC just to apply for a passport in person so we got off our butts and filed for her US citizenship. My wife is trying to visit her country for her annual trip with our kid and sad to say we got complacent building a career, raising our daughter(5 yrs old) and her attending college. We neglected the N-400 since the greencard lasts so long. I'm hoping that we can get this all knocked out by late June/early July for summer break. It's really sad and weird that she'll have to get a visa for her own country. I see alot of folks getting same day oaths and receiving the passport the next day. For the passport, is that simply through expedited service or bringing the docs with you to the Immigration office? The packet was received on 12/23 so hopefully we can pull this off! Thanks for any help or suggestions. Good to see this place is going strong since that K1 back in '04.

Assuming that your wife has filed her tax returns in the last 3 years and that she doesn't have a felony to worry about, stayed long enough in the country. etc... I don't think it will be a problem to get it done before June or July. Every case of course is different and every office works different. Some offices have same day Oath Ceremonies. Most don't. You have to check this. Because of the same day oath I had in Newark, I could pick up my passport the next day in Philadelphia. This is not a general rule though.

We've filed married/jointly for the past 3 years so no worries and neither of us have any problems. Gonna get the transcripts also. Her trips overseas have totalled less than 100 days since 2005 and I mailed off the plane ticket receipts too as proof. 6 years of marriage and a 5 year old kid should convince them. Thanks for the heads up. Unless someone else here knows about Los Angeles, I'll call them and find out if same day swearing in is available.

Immigration doesn't give you a passport. Passport office gives you a passport. You must bring the Certificate of naturalization AND a copy of it with ID to apply for one. Then request next day or expedite service on the passport(costs extra).

You should go online and check what other documents if any she needs to bring to apply for one.

Bob did his thing in LA. You can read his story here. They don't have a same day oath ceremony but all together it took 4 month or so for him to go through the process. He did have some holidays in the time frame. You not so many. June should be quite possible in my opinion.

Saw the conversation CVB and Bob had in another thread. The LA passport office is right down the street from me:

I'll be sure to schedule an appointment for the day after her oath and do the Continental airlines thing you described. Thx.

USCIS formally commits to having N400 applications processed within a 5-month time frame. I don't see any problems to get this done from start to finish until June.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Yes,

I had my interview December 6 and received the Oath letter on December 23.

A bit nebulous as to whether your wife or five year daughter is attending college, but assume it's your wife and your child is indeed five years old. If so, your child should tailgate your wife in the N-400 process, its hell when your child just barely turns 18 years of age before you can apply.

Another form of hell is to whether Kyrgyzstan will admit your wife and daughter with their place of birth in Kyrgyzstan smeared in big fat letters. But you did mention having to get a visa, hope they are nicer than Colombia, treated like a traitor for coming here to live. Thought that would be over after US citizenship for my wife, but she invited over a co-worker's mom born in Colombia, but a US citizen since 1969, and still has to fight with the Colombian consulate to get that required Colombian passport to visit her relatives. And next to impossible for her relatives, like my wifes' to get a visa to come visit us.

Thought my wife getting her US citizenship would be the end of our problems, better think again.

Then my wife was naturalized in Venezuela, Chavez won't permit the new US ambassador to enter Venezuela, and our government is talking about kicking out the Venezuelan embassy and three consulates here. More problems, we can get along just fine, but our governments, can't. But we pay the price.

Yes it is your biometrics appointment. I guess when you typed "5 y/o child and college" we didn't know if it was a typo or ??? But I guess u just meant u were discussing preparing for her college as of now. Nothing wrong with that.

Didn't get that from your original post, but here again, its that place of birth that is so important, easiest way to get your citizenship is to be born here. Now being the mom of a US citizen doesn't automatically make you a US citizen, but it works the other way around. When I read these rules, often wonder what kind of crack whoever wrote them was smoking. Or what is their logic, or is logic a dirty word.

Yes, with only 2 or 3 foreign consulates in this huge country, maintaining a foreign passport can be inconvenient and very expensive. Bugs me even more after you get naturalized, you may still have to maintain that foreign passport.
