Today (27 DEC 2010) we got a letter for the AOS interview. It is scheduled for the 26th of January 2011. I ship out to boot camp on the 19th of January. I know that it would be possible for her to go to the appointment without me as long as she has a copy of my military orders. The only problem is that the location for the appointment is 7-8 hours away and my wife was refused a drivers license without her green card. USCIS is not aware of my military status since I joined only 2 weeks ago. We currently have no one to drive her to the appointment and I am wondering if the USCIS ever makes any schedule changes for situations such as this. Thanks in advance to anyone that has any advice or comments.

Any follow-up on calling for infopass?? It would be useful to know for other soldiers in similar situations.

Updates... This morning I called the military help number offered by the USCIS (1-877-CIS-4MIL). The person I spoke with answered the questions I asked her.

1. She told me that my wife must have her EAD to get a drivers license.

2. Although she would not guarantee it, she said military orders should excuse my absence at the interview.

3. She suggested an INFOPASS meeting to discuss our case issues in person in at the CIS office in Memphis, TN.

We scheduled an INFOPASS appointment for JAN 3 and spent the rest of the day gathering documents showing that my spouse is included on things such as auto insurance, bank account, phone account, etc. I really hope that next Monday we can get an earlier interview date or luckily have it taken care of at the INFOPASS meeting.

When we went to the Infopass meeting, an attempt was made to accommodate us. My Navy contract wasn't sufficient and I had to make about 8 phone calls to my recruiter before the correct letter was sent to the Memphis USCIS office. After they received the detailed letter, our interview was rescheduled from JAN 26 to JAN 13, pending the arrival of our documents that had not been sent from Chicago. So... on our second trip to Memphis, my wife was approved for the Green Card. The guy interviewed us asked us some simple questions and then told us it would be sent in a week or two. Then he asked about my shipment date for bootcamp and told me that he had retired after serving for 20 years. We had a short conversation in which I found out his rating (job) in the Navy was the same one that I am signed up for.
