I'll be filing for citizenship based on marriage to a USC in 2011. Organised our document folder today and our tax returns for 2008 and 2009, ie the years I was (at least partially) resident in the USA are not there (we did file and are current on taxes). They may be elsewhere in the house, and I will of course look for them. But then I read the step-by-step instructions in the Guides section here on VJ, and it looks like we may not need them?

It says: 4. Documents referring to you and your spouse:

- Tax returns, bank accounts, leases, mortgages, or birth certificates of children, or

- Internal Revenue Service (IRS)-certified copies of the income tax forms that you both filed for the past three years, or

- An IRS tax return transcript for the last three years.

... it is the "or" bit that makes me believe we'll be ok; we'll have 2010 tax return, joint bank accounts started in 2008, joint bills, deed to house in both our names, separate bills with same address and birth certificate of daughter born in 2010 in the USA. That should be enough, going by the above. Right?

If not, I believe we can get the IRS to send us copies, how much does that cost and how long does it take? If it matters, we don't have W2s, only 1030s as neither husband nor I worked, were self-employed or on welfare (complicated, but essentially we are living off savings).

The preceding posters have already answered your question. I just wanna congratulate you, Silja and Will, because you will soon say goodbye to USCIS. :star: You've been helpful to other VJers and I hope this last step becomes quick and easy for you. Have a great new year!

We are in the middle of my wife's citizenship journey right now, we are waiting for the interview date. We received the yellow letter telling us that her file had been moved to the local office and it told us to bring 3 years of tax returns or transcripts to her interview. I called the IRS and used the automated system and they arrived in about 6 days. You can also call them and talk to a live person and request that they be faxed to you, but you will have to be by the fax machine that they are sending them to. If you have the time get them now. Good luck on your journey. . .

No longer in the hands of the USCIS, for my wife at least, next up MIL.

Just dial that 1-800-908-9946 number and follow the instructions, did that for my step daughter by typing in her SS number, put in all four years that she worked have the option to hang up or to put in another year. A week later all four years of transcripts came in, each in a separate envelop. Took about ten minutes on the phone. With her SS number, they knew her full name and address, just pressed "1" to verify that was correct. Not sure what would happen if I had to press "2" for no, but maybe have to do it on line.
