Normally the language is tied to behavior which is why I'm not sure that this is the entire story. On a UK train, especially at night you get the drunks being belligerent which eventually turns into a fist fight. Here (at least on BART) its the rough ghetto talk that normally starts something, and for some reason its always directed at woman. Don't ask me why.

I agree. Profanity that is not directed at another person in order to threaten or harass shouldn't be regulated like this.

If someone were swearing around my kid, perfect opportunity to have a conversation with him about proper use of language. It would be nice if everyone cared about refraining from using offensive language around children, but they don't. Not a huge deal IMO.
