Actually that is not true. If someone refuses a patdown they will be escorted from the security area. They aren't detained unless they are acting up in that case they will be detained because it is a crime to prevent a Federal Officer doing his job.

I have to agree here. I doubt that we have heard the whole story here. If we have heard a truthful and complete account of what happened then I would also be outraged. One problem here is that having a pacemaker is not a reason not to have the scan performed, at least not from a medical point of view. X-Rays are routinely done for patients with these devices, no problems at all. Either the woman is lying, was confused about what is OK with her pacemaker, or refused it on grounds other than that she has a pacemaker. My guess is that she created a scene there. But it is entirely possible that an individual working for TSA grossly overstepped the bounds with her. I think the majority of people working for TSA are decent, conscientious individuals who are doing everything in their power to respect the rights and feelings of the flying public while also performing the requirements of their jobs in an effort to prevent airline related terrorist attacks. I know Paul has this thing against TSA but I hope he learns they are real people too just trying to do their job. If there is a better way to ensure our safety I am sure they would be interested.

The way that they have to pat down under the breast area is by a short upward movement that basically goes under the breast but not on it. It is invasive to me but it is what it is.

If she's uncomfortable with the pat downs she should have taken a bus or train. These are the guidelines we all must follow, her circumstances are sad and I feel for her, however that does not make her exempt from the rules. When anyone refuses to be searched at the airport they're going to be detained.
