Hey everyone,

My fiance is on his way to visit me for Christmas! He's 3/4 of the way to the border and just realized he left the receipts for my gifts at home. Oops! I think he's just planning on bringing a couple over that aren't wrapped and they're all under the $60 per gift limit he just can't prove it. His parents live in NY state so he's dropping their gifts off first and then coming over the border to see me. We're going over there boxing day, so if he might have problems at the border with no receipts then he can just leave them over the border and give them to me on boxing day.

Does anyone know if he needs the receipts for these gifts at the border? Thanks!

I agree the husband Brought a trunk full of Gifts 2 years ago and had no problems. Some were wrapped, but the larger items were not. He never showed receipts just told them what he was bringing and approx cost of all the items.

We as a couple brought back some presents for my mom and nana a few months ago as well. It was my last stay in Canada for the interview so I wanted everyone to have something from us ...as we didnt know when we would be back....March 2011 :)

I know the limit on bringing gifts into the USA is $100...anyone know if they're a bit lenient at Christmas? I think I'm pretty much right at $100 in my bag of gifts going with me tonight.

Wouldn't worry about it too much unless it is a big ticket item or an item is unusual or where the value of it may not be apparent or varies depending on the quality, ie a piece of jewellery. Most BSO (border service officers) will know values of general gifts, clothing, household goods etc and take your word for it.

my mom brought well over 100$ of gifts in on the 23rd. They didnt give her problems or really question it at all, she was with my sister who also had gifts that she told them about. No problems.

Thanks everyone for the responses. He had no problems at the border like you said. They just wanted to know the value of gifts, how many and what they were (a book and a computer game). They didn't even want to look at them.

I'm pretty sure I brought about $150 worth of gifts over the US border for my fiance last year (flying through Pearson airport) and they had no problems..the guard just wanted to know what sort of gifts I had and then said that he hoped I got nice stuff back from my fiance. lol

Merry Christmas everyone!!

I crossed into the USA yesterday with gifts and back to Canada today with gifts. Was no problem at all...US CBP just asked if my gifts were tobacco, alcohol, food, or plants. Canadian CBP just wondered what the value was, that's all. Easy peasy! Merry Christmas everybody!
