Hello !

I entered on K 1 in May and applied for the SSN in July. I was told I was out of status. If I' m not mistaken, AOS pending isn' t out of status ( Uscis recently approved my AP & EAD also ) Should I wait for my AOS to be approved or should I go to the SSN office ? Do I need a SSN for most jobs applications ?

Thank you !

When you have your EAD or Greencard in hand you will be able to apply for SSN until that time your I-94 dates are what matters to SSA.

My EAD was approved recently ( I have it in my wallet :) ) Do I need both approved, though?

Does the EAD have an expiration date on it? if it does then I'd say it's worth going to SSA with that and applying.

Once your AOS (therefore Greencard) is approved the EAD is useless as Green card holders (LPRs) are authorized to work.

BTW, just to apply you don't need a SSN but in order to start a job you will need it.

The EAD card is evidence of work authorization, the EAD card along with your passport is evidence of identity and your passport or birth certificate (I would take the birth certificate and passport if you have both) can be used as evidence of age. So if you have those things, you are all set to apply. However, your status will need to be verified before the SSN can be assigned. If you are lucky it can be done while you are in the office. Otherwise, it can take a few more weeks and sometimes even a month or more.
