What happened to pride in the USA? Show your pride and say the pledge. IMO this is one of the problems with this country now. Can't do this or that because it may offend someone. Did anybody ever think it offends me and many other (traditional Americans) to not be able to do those things. When I grew up it was recited daily. We said it with pride.

For those students who don't live here and are offended, what are you doing in a US class anyway. Sit back and listen to the AMERICANS say the pledge. Stand with them and respect the people. We're showing pride in our great country. If you don't take pride in it, the borders are wide open going the other direction.

Heck, I stand and follow suit with the locals when national anthoms are played in other country's as well because I respect my hosts. Is that so hard?

A permission slip to say the pledge---give me a break.

Just curious, do you believe in the constitution?

Yep. Moreso than most.

I realize my point wasn't entirely clear... I didn't mean that everyone should be forced to say the pledge, rather that it's ridiculous to suggest (as a previous poster did) that those who choose to recite the pledge should have to leave the room in order to do so. This is the US. If you are so "offended" by people saying the pledge in your presence, then you should be the one that has to "opt-out" rather than forcing those who choose to recite it to "opt-in" to going to the hall, or wherever.

I respect the right of an American to choose not to recite the pledge (as much as I respect the right of a non-American to ignore the whole thing altogether), but asking those who wish to recite to make it "less inconvenient" for those who feel differently is offensive to me. If you aren't comfortable "opting out" of saying the pledge, start a school, find somewhere more sympathetic, whatever, but don't expect that people are going to try to accomodate you.

I have to agree. Whats the motivation for the "opt-in?

I love these "if you don't like it - GTFO" statements. I'd say this POV sounds just more resistant to change, and your confederate flag avatar just reinforces that :P

i don't see this as a permission slip. i see as a notice to all parents that the pledge will be part of the first day of the weeks classes. it states that reciting the pledge is optional. it has 2 check lines yes/no my child will/will not participate & wants the parents signature for verification that they know about the change. it looks like legal coverage for the school against someone looking for a reason to be offended.
