Let me say just this: if we had a draft here and the American people would see their very own kids get shipped off to war zones, the US would get out of these insane wars within a year.

Germany's mandatory service will be history come next March. The service was reduced to 6 months this year and will entirely disappear next spring. As for the shipping off to war zones for this population of service members, it requires their consent. None of the "Wehrpflichtigen" in Germany has ever been sent into a warzone unless they volunteered for such mission. So, that reasoning doesn't quite hold water.

I can't speak for anything other than my family's history with it, but I would say both. My grandfather and my uncle were able to go to West Point, and then to war. My father however did not get that opportunity, he was denied his college deferment and sent to boot.

Unfortunately thats how the TOS is being enforced these days. If you asked a Moderator they would agree that such statements are disgusting. But they don't think it crosses a line.

I'll wait for Charles to chime in. I only know what has happened in my family. In the case of my uncle and my grand father, they did not have to apply for a deferment because their enrollment at west point implied their intentions.

Of course not. There's no reasonable argument to be made that teachers were better in the past than they are today. A reasonable argument that can be made, on the other hand, is that families do not function as they have in the past and that kids are largely spoiled little brats nowadays not being taught at home from early childhood on the very basic lessons that children were once taught.
