Iv'e spent over twenty years in the Iron Workers union and paid dues to the Pipe Fitters union for close to ten. We bust our f*cking ####### off working no less than 12 hour days, 7 days a week until we fly back home for our leave time, and if anyone slacks they are sent down the road. If you don't have all the facts, don't post about what you don't have a clue on.

.

You don't work in NYC, then.

The jobsite was central Manhattan, a $25m interior fit-out. If you visited the site at 2:25pm, the site would be bustling, noisy and filled with tradesmen. 10 minutes later and the sound of silence was only noise around. We never worked out how they managed to pack up tools, clean-up the work area and get that many people down six floors in under 10 minutes.

Where I am now, the Union Hall is tapped dry of decent electricians, so much so that the "dregs", the ones that routinely get let go by one Subcontractor after another, are rotated round the 3 electrical Subcontractors on a weekly basis, because the Unions refuse to bring in outside replacements who are competent and willing to work. But because of the PLA, these freeloaders keep getting hired on because the Union will pitch a hissy fit if the Subcontractors refuse.

Then add in the almost 30% premium to the total job cost for going the PLA route.

The miracle is that the Owner knows the cost, but still wants to invest in the USA.

Don't interrupt me when I'm talking to myself

Iv'e heard that corruption in east coast locals runs rampant. In Alaska, Washington, and Oregon the skilled trades such as the Iron Workers bust their ####### off. That isn't to say that thievery hasn't occurred here in regards to the unions. Some locals have had their funds invested in shady deals and they have lost the farm due to this.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Not me. I worked there for a while, then got out. The commute from NJ was too much, the hours too long and I just didn't get NYC.

The highlighted part is the problem, IMO. You can't get NYC if you don't live here.
