So only a "select few" should belong to a union ?Why cannot everyone make more money and have more benefits? Is not this the reason mentioned in the article?Try to encourage everyone to be unionized. So again make believe it is a wonderfull life and describe a world where everyone is unionized.

Please stop the disingenuous acting here, it's quite lame. Go reread what I actually posted as opposed to what you have imagined that I have posted. I never said any of that, so you can stop projecting here. I will reiterate my point, again, slowly this time so as not to confuse. Unions are not all evil, they do a lot of good work. But, unions are run by humans and as such, inherently flawed. They are self centered entities who only care about their own interest. You would think that unions are tantamount to the gestappo from the hyperbole you and your ilk spew. So again, all I am saying is that Unions aren't quite the villain that many make them out to be. Flawed? yes, evil? no.

Walmart? What is wrong with the working conditions at Walmart? Those conditions are sweet compared to a lot of the union factory jobs I have had. They even get health care, vacation and profit sharing. I have had many union jobs that didn't even give me that.

Seriously? You've never heard about the massive complaints, government lawsuits and class action lawsuits? They didn't get those job perks because Walmart decided to become egalitarian. Walmart is notorious for threatening to fire everyone if they unionized. There are multiple websites on the internet where people document their horrible working conditions.

Walmart gets beat up on because it makes profit. The left doesn't like profit. ;)

Paul, maybe you should actually read up on the topic before posting.

I have no problem with requiring that workers be informed of their right to organize. I am against card check though. Workers should vote on unionization by private ballot rather than by union thugs pressuring them to fill out cards.

+1

One of the industries that I tried to get into straight out of university was international logistics. I found out all too well that those were "Dock" jobs. You don't get to work at any job at the docks without being in the union first. You don't get into that union without deep connections.

Seriously, have you tried to compare the complaints against Walmart and any other large company? They are no better or no worse than any other. The reason we hear so much about it is because the unions have targeted Walmart for the "treatment". I know several people that work there and they are very happy with their jobs. The only people that don't like walmart are the union types and those brainwashed by the unions.

I work for a company that threatens to fire everyone that tries to unionize. I was notified of that fact upon my hiring and is a part of the conditions of my employment. My pay, fringe benefits and working conditions are the best I have ever had including my union jobs. Unions have outlived their usefulness. They need to go away.

Yes, actually I have. Walmart is one of the worst offenders in this country. I heard about Walmart going back to the 90's when I was in university. They were the biggest employer in town, and quite a few people I know worked there, and one of my friends was involved in a lawsuit against Walmart. It turns out that making your employees work 90 minutes after their shift, without paying them is a violation of a couple labor laws.

Unions are not obsolete, and to suggest abolishing them is quite naive.

The Wal-Mart stores around DFW are quite nice/clean/good conditions for employees overall.

I have seen some deplorable stores in small towns, but really I expect that to be honest out in bum-####-nowhere...

This is just left wing bashing. As I said, I know several people that work at Walmart. They are happy with their jobs. Most of this is just bashing by the unions. The unions know that their time has passed and are using less than honest ways of staying in business. If unions went away tomorrow I would not shed a tear. They are obsolete in today's America.

So all the lawsuits and investigations are all lying BS made up by liberals to discredit a fine corporate citizen like Walmart. I see now. You are still wrong about unions though. They arent' obsolete, nor are they going anywhere. I would be in favor of them being subject to stricter laws.

Between giving the poor jobs and selling necessities at a price the poor can afford, walmart has done more to help the poor than any government agency or program. If the unions got their greedy claws into it the poor will be much worse off.

Strawman argument there. Walmart sells crappy products from china and takes advantage of the people's lack of knowledge of labor laws.

I still love how Wal-Mart gave Canadian Unions the middle finger. Then the morons sued Wal-Mart for closing the store that they wanted to unionize. The courts laughed the Unions out the door. It was pretty damn awesome!

Wal-Mart's main "flaw" if you want you call it that is its buying power. It essentially helps the poor, sure.. but it also harms the rest of the market. They buy so much ####### that they get things almost at cost (sometimes less) and the manufacturers end up passing on their costs to other chains with less buying power.

Take lunch meat for example. I can buy Oscar Meyer products for $2.98 at Wal-Mart, but have to pay $4.98 at a competing grocer.

Is Wal-Mart 'too big?' Possibly.

Are working conditions bad though? It depends if you want to hold the corporate office accountable for each and every individual store or not......

Walmart is not a franchise organization, so yes, their head office is responsible for the actions of its stores. The lawsuits against them are not for a few isolated instances of malfeasance.

Corporate accountability is a bit silly though for a company that big. Maybe hold a regional field office accountable, but the main HQ itself? Hardly seems reasonable. You're going to get bad apples and quite a few in a company that big.

Some allegations might be true, but others are just bandwagon jumpers trying to make a buck.

As long as the law itself isn't being violated, then there really should be a non-issue. If you don't like where you work, go elsewhere. It's pretty simple.

Yes, lets shift the blame from those culpable. If the organization has grown to the point at which they have lost control over operations, then maybe intervention is needed. If I am at a stakeholder meeting, those who have a stake won't buy that #######.

And the lawsuits that was brought against them and won and even got a nice sum out of was done by non union workers. It created a huge change in that company and all by NON UNION workers.

Unions were an offshoot of communism that eventually was taken over by the mob. I want to work where I get noticed andf even advanced and hopefully rcognized with more pay and advancement by my work ethic and superior attitude and other criteria. I do not want someone to get this stuff just because they were there before me or are a friend or relative or give the bribe to a union rep.

Unions usually are detrimental to a area they are in by making them less cost effective. The north is bleeding talent and tax base because companies are leaving for greener pastures. Now with the Socialist admin in place they are going to try to get their loot while the getting is good but all will happen is more jobs leaving and higher costs to consumers.

In the world, yes. No doubt. But our unions have nothing to do with that. With health and safety laws and minimum wage laws the reason the unions were formed in the first place is moot. At this point all they do is hold companies hostage to work stoppages to demand things that years down the road ends up destroying their own jobs. There is nothing wrong with someone wanting a better wage or more benefits but the broad brush the unions paint things with just encourages mediocrity rather than excellence. You should know that I have been in unions all my life. My father was a union man all his working life. Having experienced the "union" way of life I can tell you it is one of the reasons our jobs are going else where. There is no good reasons for a union in this day and age. They did a tremendous good for workers on the first half of the 20th century and we have a lot to thank them for but they have eliminated their own reason for being.

Iv'e spent over twenty years in the Iron Workers union and paid dues to the Pipe Fitters union for close to ten. We bust our f*cking ####### off working no less than 12 hour days, 7 days a week until we fly back home for our leave time, and if anyone slacks they are sent down the road. If you don't have all the facts, don't post about what you don't have a clue on.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."
