The Census Bureau's release of new population data Tuesday will likely lead to a shift in political power from the Democratic Rust Belt to the Republican Sun Belt, potentially helping the GOP consolidate power in Congress.

The U.S.'s 435 House seats are distributed according to the census, a decennial effort that apportions power in ways that sometimes last for generations. State legislatures, a slight majority of which will be in Republican hands next year, have the power to redraw district maps to maximize the chances of victory for a party's candidate.

Difficult economic times have actually slowed the shift in population, making the coming changes based on the 2010 Census less dramatic than 20 or 30 years ago, Mr. Brace said. For the president, such small shifts would make a difference only in the closest of elections. The expected new electoral map would shave just seven electoral votes from the 365 Mr. Obama won in 2008.

I had one of those as a neighbor before. The census workers came to my apartment numerous times, during the day, at night, and during the weekend. What is worse is that they were asking me questions about my neighbor. I didn't know my neighbor very well other than her name, but of course the census workers don't believe that, and of course they don't go away when you shut the door.

I can remember listening to conservative radio shows when they were taking the census. Their outrage would have been comedy gold, if it weren't for the fact that these loons actually believe this.
