Cairo throws a street party for Ramses

Ah, Ramses Station. Any Egypt girls been through there? The streets outside seem to be the most deadly in all of Cairo. And there, among all the traffic, pollution and hubbub, is an ancient statute of Ramses. Correction, was an ancient statute. They've finally gotten around to moving it to the pyramids. Gee, being exposed to the exhaust of millions of cars isn't good for it?

One thing that disapoints me about Egypt (aside from the rampent poverty and garbage on the streets) is how little mind is paid to their history. I'm used to the American National Park/Monuments system, where our historic sites all have little guided tours and signs, all nicely packaged and presented. While in Cairo, my husband and I found our way to Imam Shafi's tomb. No little brochures, no signs in many languages, just a dusty mosque in among the cemetaries and guys in ragged galabiyas asking for baksheesh.

Ok, enough of my side tangent, here are the pics. Descriptions of the pics can be found at the link. Maybe they'll spruce of the pyramids complex now?

Cool pics! Thanks, Rahma :) What I found interesting also is that with a simple bribe they'll let you use flash photography in the museums. Here you absolutely cannot. They truly have no respect for the gifts they have. I think that has a lot to do with miserable living conditions and poverty (in some cases). The children and invalids begging in the streets were some of the most heartbreaking things I've ever seen.

I'm sitting here all teary eyed. These bring back such memories. We must have been all over the area around that train station a million times and saw them preparing the statue to move. Moh was upset about it. He loves ancient Egyptian culture and didn't want it moved to a place where he couldn't see it readily. It was sure an amazing thing to see.
