Yeah...and some people will refuse to pay traffic fines or appear in municipal court too. Jail time to work off fines and/or impounding of the offending vehicle will change a whole lot regardless what you proclaim. When some illegal alien assclown gets in a pissing match with the state and local authorities I can tell you who ends up winning. Regardless if the federal government under Obama blocks deportation to protect these lawbreakers or not. Nothing new here. Local authorities still have jurisdiction and can enforce these law in this regard. Obama and his cronies cannot proclaim illegal aliens immune to local laws that apply to everyone. Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

I'm sorry, you lost me at "assclown" ... I don't think I can take someone seriously who refers to human beings that way. But A+ for effort, really.

I'm glad you are speechless. It means you really don't have anything to say of any substance to bolster your position on the issue other than proclaiming that illegal aliens are unstoppable. It must be a real shock to find out that they are not unstoppable.

I wonder how they are going to do this, practically speaking. And I wonder who will get caught up in it - like VJers with a pending I-485, for example.

I agree. I doubt very much that those who already have a driver's license issued under the old identity policies are going to be rounded up. They will only be affected when they try to renew that license.

I agree that people should have to prove "who they are" when they get a driver's license. But the policies to prove that can be quite invasive, both for those already here legally and regular USC's. I was in the DMV the other day and witnessed a young Iranian gentleman having no success even though he had a US passport and a foreign driver's license, because his documents were not translated.

In most states, even with an I551 greencard, you will only be issued a license up until the date of expiry of that greencard. IMO this is an example of states trying to interpret immigration policy. Say for example you are like my husband, who is uninterested in becoming a US citizen. He can keep renewing his greencard for life, but every time he gets a card, there is an expiry date on it. USCIS only puts a date on the card so they can "keep track" of aliens every 10 years. But the States interpret that date to be an expiration of legal status.

I do think people need prove their legal presence. But any policy created is still going to have pain-in-the-a$$ beureucratic effect on all of us.

Our journey together on this earth has come to an end.

I will see you one day again, my love.

It's not hard to comprehend when you state that, "They'll still drive (illegally). And they'll still come (illegally)." It gives the impression that you believe illegal aliens are immune to our laws and that they are unstoppable, so we are forced to accommodate them. I disagree. Enforcing the law isn't about the cost. It is about deterring undesirable illegal activity. Accommodating illegal aliens is undesirable. Let the bastards ride bicycles like they do here in Houston. If they don't like it...they can go back home.

Isn't it? Serious question. Once the green card expires, if it's not renewed, is he still here legally?

Isn't it? Serious question. Once the green card expires, if it's not renewed, is he still here legally?

Yes he is.

http://www.foreignborn.com/visas_imm/immigrant_visas/green_cards/2faqs_expiring_green_cards.htm

Why does USCIS put 10-year expiration dates on Green Cards?

To protect against counterfeiting and tampering, in 1989 INS initiated 10-year Green Card renewal / expiration dates. The Green Card is also called Form I-551 and the Permanent Resident Card, and was formerly called the Alien Registration Receipt Card.

How do I know if I need to renew my Green Card?

Green Cards issued since 1989 have an expiration date on the front of the card that indicates a 10-year validity before Green Card renewal is required. If you were issued your Green Card about 10 years ago and the card has an expiration date on it, you should check the expiration date to see when your card needs to be renewed.

Do I need to renew my Green Card if it was issued between 1979 and 1988 but does not have an expiration date?

No. Green Cards issued between 1979 and 1988 do not have Green Card renewal / expiration dates and do not need to be renewed at this time. USCIS will develop a plan for replacing these Green Cards at a future time.

Will I lose my permanent resident status if I do not renew my Green Card?

No, you will not lose your permanent resident status if you do not renew your Green Card – your permanent resident status will not expire or change if you do not complete Green Card renewal. However, you are required by law to carry evidence of your status / registration (e.g. a valid, unexpired Green Card or the temporary proof of status you receive at the time of filing to renew your Green Card.)

What will happen if I do not renew my expiring Green Card?

If you fail to renew your expiring card, you may experience difficulties in obtaining employment, benefits and re-entry into the United States from abroad.

Our journey together on this earth has come to an end.

I will see you one day again, my love.

I didn't say I agreed with it. My opinion on it doesn't matter at all. It's a fact that they'll still come and drive illegally. Do you honestly believe not being able to obtain a drivers license will stop that?

Enforcing law IS about the cost to a degree. There are a variety of ways to enforce the law and they're not all possible at the same time, so why go for something that's not going to make much of a difference in the long run? If you only have the funding to stop drunk drivers OR to stop people driving with expired tags, which would you choose?

Anyway, that's all I'll say to you, because I find you horribly offensive to continue to refer to illegal immigrants as "bastards" and "assclowns" regardless of whether or not you agree with it or not. The state of TX used to be lax in issuing driver's licenses to illegal aliens using stolen Social Security numbers. They also did not tie driving privileges to expiration of valid visas. Slowly but surely the chickens are coming to roost here in TX for scofflaws. I personally know of one of my stepdaughter's Kazakhstani friends that came over on a valid visa and decided to overstay. Guess what? When he went to renew his expired driver's licenses he was refused. He was working as a delivery courier using his own car and decided it was time to go back home. The game was over. Refusing driver's licenses to illegal aliens does deter.

The state of TX is also using Social Security number no match to weed out the fraudsters. We found that out when my wife originally got her driver's license before she got her Green Card and along the way until she renewed it after becoming a US citizen. Now she will be able to renew online like I do without having to present all kinds of documents in person.

States should not be handing out driver's licenses to illegal aliens and many states like TX are no longer doing it. States that hand out driver's licenses to illegal aliens do it by choice.

Typical liberal mentality:

Turn the criminals into victims and then surrender. Sure...jump over a fence and we'll give you a driver's license. To do otherwise is too expensive.

So didn't I just say they (EWI's) would only be affected when they renew? You quoted me as if you wanted to argue with my comment. I don't see any argument in what you wrote. The news article quoted said the governor is going to "revoke" driver's licenses issued under the old method. What does "revoke" mean? Going through the driver's roster and knocking on the door of everyone with a Hispanic surname? I don't think so. Therefore renewal is where they will be stymied. Some will leave as in your example, some will not.

SS match. Do you like that? I don't particularly. Our SS numbers were never meant to be a way to identify us. What about aliens using stolen SS numbers? USC's for that matter? The thief usually takes on the name of the person's SS they are using. Does not seem very effective to me.

Before you go jumping all stiff-legged and claiming I support illegal entry - let it be known that I do not. Let it also be known that I am leery of any newer, more invasive method of restricting my movement in this great country.

The point of posting the article was to highlight the State of New Mexico taking measures to return to the rule of law and not force State agencies to turn a blind eye to illegal immigration. Upholding and enforcing the law should never be held ransom to how much it costs, or whether it supports a political agenda. It should be based upon the law itself.

New Mexico, under Gov. Bill Richardson actively suppressed the verification of applicants' status, basically showing complete disregard for the law. The ending of this policy is a step in the right direction.

The result of these types of measures will be an increase in driving costs for those who are legal and buy insurance. It's one of those reactionary ideas that gets the right's juices rising but actually has no positive outcome on the problems that it's supposed to address and has a negative affect on everyone else. Brilliant.

I should add this is typical of the radical right. There are many on the right who are rational and pragmatic and who refuse to get drawn into these types of shenanigans.

I agree with this. I don't think NOT verifying their status is the right way to go, nor do I see any reason not to START verifying statuses of new applicants. I just think it's pointless and ineffective to begin revoking licenses, and depending on how it is done may well infringe on the civil liberties of people who are NOT here illegally - USCs, even.
