Rob,

So it can be determined if a person is unlicensed versus just forgot their card right? If thats the case, they would be arrested?

At any rate this is good news to me. Every state should verify before providing any ID.

US government at any level should not be giving government issued ID to illegal aliens. A driver's license is a defacto government issued ID and is used as such in many applications. When a US government entity issues ID to a known illegal alien it sends out the wrong message that their illegal status has some sort of legitimacy. Not to mention that it makes it easier for illegal aliens to live, thrive, and survive in the USA illegally. It encourages, aids, and enables illegal immigration.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

They issue licenses to people to certify that they are able to drive in that state, not as a means of verifying residency or immigration status. I have never had a job where they would be satisfied with a copy of my drivers license to verify my employment status.

Accusing my of throwing out a red herring?

I did no such thing. Where did I connect a Drivers License to Employment? I said why make it easier on them by issuing them any state id or drivers license. I then went a little further and said that business who hire illegals should be punished. That doesn't connect the two.

That is different. Driving with a revoked or suspended license will draw those sorts of fines. Depending on the circumstances of your being stopped by the police and why your license was suspended, you could be arrested (DUI).

And if NM rescinds the drivers' licences for illegal aliens, it is this level of offence that will have occurred.

Yes, they can, although I cannot say with any certainty that all can.

I don't see how it aids illegal immigration when a drivers license is NOT used as a means to verify immigration status. What you propose is essentially a national ID. See how much traction that idea gets. Ultimately, there is going to need to be federal legislation to change the rules of ID's. I like the idea of a national ID, I'm just not too keen on the data collection possibilities of one.

And if NM rescinds the drivers' licences for illegal aliens, it is this level of offence that will have occurred.

Indeed.

The federal government needs to grow a sack and mandate e-verify, plain and simple.

I don't know about in other states, but around here, getting pulled over for something that would not in and of itself net you a trip to the slammer and being unlicensed will NOT get you arrested. Not even for a minute. You'll get a ticket, and you'll have to appear in court, and even then, you have practically zero chance of going to jail. You'll get a big fine, and a warning that if you get caught driving unlicensed AGAIN then you'll be arrested. That's it.

I'm with Rob & Mel on this one - I don't think a license aids illegal immigration. It lets them drive. That's it. They're still illegal. They can still be arrested if they commit a crime like vehicular manslaughter or DUI. And they can still be deported then. Chasing around people who have already got their licenses and revoking them sounds like a waste of money and manpower.

The point of this is to create new ways to arrest illegal immigrants and force the federal government to deport them. I'm all for deporting illegal immigrants, I'm just not sold on this method.

It certainly aids the illegal aliens once they are here.

agreed. having a driver's license allows them to move around and get to work once they are here. and if pulled over, it turns what could be potentially a trip to jail for operating without a license to a ticket only. i'd call giving illegals a driver's license aiding the illegals.

Like I said, not here. Getting pulled with no license AND being illegal will net you a big fine and nothing more. You will not be arrested. ICE will not be contacted. Nothing happens. Maybe this idea will work to help with illegal immigration in other states, but Virginia already requires proof of legal presence - more recently after that incident with the illegal immigrant and the DUI - and it makes no difference. People drive without licenses and anyway, and unless they hurt someone NOTHING HAPPENS.

So because it won't land them in jail in some places that makes it bad/ineffective in every place?

Personally I say put up as many roadblocks (figurative) to them in daily life. Sure a person can live "off the grid" but let's be honest here, having valid State Issued ID does make some things easier.

There are more effective things they could be spending time/money on. Nothing's going to change because they take their licenses. They'll still drive. And they'll still come.

Yeah...and some people will refuse to pay traffic fines or appear in municipal court too. Jail time to work off fines and/or impounding of the offending vehicle will change a whole lot regardless what you proclaim. When some illegal alien assclown gets in a pissing match with the state and local authorities I can tell you who ends up winning. Regardless if the federal government under Obama blocks deportation to protect these lawbreakers or not. Nothing new here. Local authorities still have jurisdiction and can enforce these law in this regard. Obama and his cronies cannot proclaim illegal aliens immune to local laws that apply to everyone. Put that in your pipe and smoke it!
