My husband moved over to the UK to live in 09. He filed taxes early 09 but hasn't since then, he wasn't aware that he would need to. After reading I've realised that he still needs to file regardless of where he lives. Has anyone else been in this situation and can anyone advise on the easiest way to file for 2010?

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

If he did taxes in early 2009, then that was his 2008 return. In the US we (usually) wait for the year to end then will file for the past year's income during Jan-April 15. So your husband will be looking to catch up by doing his 2009 taxes. If he is catching up online, make sure he does 2009 because TurboTax already has 2010 up and running. His 2010 tax return will be due by April 15, 2011.

He may not owe anything to the IRS in taxes if the money was earned and taxed in the UK, but he is required to document his earnings with a US tax return.

www.irs.gov has all the forms and instruction publications online. Here's a good place to start reading Aliens and U.S. Citizens Living Abroad .

My husband hadn't filed his taxes since 2007 when he moved here, he only realised he had to when we were going through my visa application, so he filed them for 3 years this summer, following the instructions on the embassy website. Had no problems with it at all.

He can use the online software, but the "e-filing" options are not available after October 15 for the previous year. He would have to mail a paper return.

Sorry, just checked. Cannot use the software online either...would have to purchase and download (at lest for Turbo Tax)
