In peace time, sure. But, once the govt. feels the need to take over, foreign airlines will be grounded or "asked to leave, preferably with 'our friends' who now need to get home quickly."

I've gotta go (MNF!) but seriously, look it up. The govt. can take over the airlines because they finance all the purchases. Same with rail, trucks, etc.

There is a social cost to living in a metropolitan area slim. To live there, you are consenting to a social contract. If you don't like it, you can move out to an unincorporated county or city and not have to pay taxes.

HSR will be run by the unions and the gov't... that enough right there, but it will also be a system that will need constant taxpayer support. it is also a closed system, unlike the airlines, you have many companies to choose from, but with HSR, you have no options, the airlines and one's own automobile beat it hands down.
