Hi,

We have the sposal visa in hand and we booked the ticket. According to my wife she took the CFO seminar when she applied for passport. Is it true that is required for leaving the country and one can not leave the country without it? does anyone know how certificate looks like? we would love to make sure she has the right one.

The thing is she has a blue and green certificate with the seal. she took it in 2007 when she applied for passport and I think was also requirement for us to get married.

so we have the blue and the green certificate issued in 2007 but we can not recall any stickers in passport? is just a matter of newer format or is something we need to aquire?

your wife needs to go back on where she had the CFO seminar just show them the blue certificate and they will put sticker on your wifes passport..:)...

PRISM does have the stickers. To get a sticker, his wife will need to go to the CFO main office or to the CFO satellite office at St. Mary's.

  • 3 weeks later...

My wife went to get her application for her passport today. They told her that because she is married to a foreigner, she will need the take the CFO class first then she can apply for her passport. Or she can apply without the CFO class after 7 months of mariage. Has anyone else been told this? Thanks!

Wow...I didn't realize they had this requirement. We got married Jan 2009, and I applied for a renewal of my passport in my married name on Aug 2009. They processed it without a hitch.

On the DFA website, it says:

If you would like to use the surname of your spouse:

  • Marriage Contract (MC) in Security Paper issued by NSO and Certified True Copy issued by the Local Civil Registrar if MC secpa is unreadable.
  • Certificate of Attendance from CFO (Commission of Filipino Overseas) if married to a foreigner (color green).

Since I applied for mine 7 months after we were married, then I am guessing the information your wife received is true also.

Thanks for the info. I am very happy that we were married in the Philippines, but because of all the red tape we have been through, I kind of wish we just went the K-1 route.

Don't think for a minute that other applicants are immune from red tape. lol

The big plus about getting an IR1/CR1 visa is that your wife hits the ground running after she arrives in the U.S. No adjustment of status; if you guys have been married less than 2 years, there is removal of conditions. But still, that's a $1,070 step less.

Do you recommend I go to PRISM or St. Marys?

My Journey:

We met through a study-abroad program in Shanghai, China in August of 2009

We got engaged March of 2010

I received my K1 VISA in 6 months (June-December 2010)

We were married 04/02/2011
I received my conditional 2-year greencard (AOS) in 2.5 months with no interview (April-June 2011)

Our son was born 02/03/2013

I received my masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology 04/17/2013

I received my 10-year greencard (ROC) in 3 months with no interview (March-June 2013)

My husband returned from deployment 06/20/2013

My naturalization journey took 4 months (April-August 2014)

I became a US citizen on 08/01/2014

Received passport in 3 weeks (regular processing)

Thank you, VJ! smile.png

Also, I know this question has been asked countless times, but what should I bring for the CFO? I already have my passport and visa

Go to St. Mary's to get your CFO requirements done. Here's the link to their website:

http://www.smef-cow-phil.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=62&Itemid=68

The people are friendly, and so much easier to deal with compared to CFO head office. You can get the guidance and counseling requirement done in the morning (you will receive a blue certificate of completion), and get your CFO sticker and green certificate of completion on the same day at the CFO satellite office behind St. Mary's (they are in the same compound).

Also, I know this question has been asked countless times, but what should I bring for the CFO? I already have my passport and visa

I got my passport two weeks after the interview. And she can go to CFO even without her passport, but she will have to go back to have it stamped. Why not just let her do it a day or two before she leaves for the US? So she does not have to go back and forth :)
