does your state have Vietnamese driver license test ?

my state ( Michigan ) allow people take test in Vietnamese, everyone if not the most stupid can pass on the first try.

Yeah, California offers the written test in Vietnamese. California also offers copies of the driver's manual in Vietnamese, both printed and downloadable. They passed the written test without any problems. They have a Vietnamese driving instructor, and each have over 50 hours of on-the-road experience. They took the test in the driving instructor's car. My step-son failed because he forgot to turn on his headlights and wipers when pulling out of the carport at the DMV (it was raining lightly). My step-daughter nearly clobbered a parked car pulling out of the DMV parking lot. The test administrator wrote that he had to use the second brake pedal on the instructor's side of the car in order to avoid the accident. Obviously, that was the end of the test.

how much did you get the Kim Tu Dien GD7000's for? I just did a quick search and ebay had it for 350ish.

hopefully you didn't overpay.

The shop was asking $370, but I got them for $350 each, tax included, for an out-the-door total of $700. This was at Century Music in the Century Plaza mall in San Jose. If anyone comes to the SF bay area you MUST go to Century Plaza in San Jose. It's the only totally Vietnamese shopping mall in Northern California!

When I first came here, my aunt (the person sponsored my family) gave me a brand new Lexus 330. So any relative that gave me things like Walmart GCs, I gave them a dirty look and said "It's America now. I'm no longer in VN. Don't be a cheap #### with me now!"

Just remember, life over there in VN is NOT real! Your money will be worth a LOT less once you get back over here. Back to reality, cowboy!

You can still get the "EV" models for around that price. They're basic pocket translators - B/W screen, English <-> Viet translation, and few other features. Most new EV's can also play MP3's if you add an SD card.

The GD series, and the GD7000 in particular, are completely different animals. Color touch screen, animated illustrated dictionary, video and MP3 playback, rechargeable LiIon battery. They include English, Viet, Cantonese, Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, and Russian. They even have handwriting recognition for Chinese. There's also the complete Oxford compact dictionary, study guides for the TOEIC, TOEFL, GRE, GMAT, IELTS, and even a study guide for the cosmetology test for manicurists. The voice pronunciation system is also greatly improved over the synthetic voice used in early "EV" models. It also comes with an AC adapter/charger, earbuds, and a 4GB SD card.

Requires internet access. A more practical approach is a smart phone and Google translate. My step daughter has an HTC Incredible, and she uses Google translate occasionally, but when we asked her what gift she wanted she specifically said a Kim Tu Dien, though she asked for the GD3100V, which wasn't available in any of the shops in San Jose. I didn't have time to buy one on eBay and get it in time for Christmas, and the GD7000 is far better for only slightly more money.

Both of my step-kids already have netbooks (gifts from last Christmas). They use them every day, but they leave them at home. They're small, but not pocket size, and you need to be near a WiFi router in order to use them for anything a teenager would use them for. Whenever we leave the house they always bring my old Kim Tu Dien ED62. I never get to use it anymore because my wife or one of my step-kids has always got it.

What I would REALLY like to see is a version with a small edge scanner that you could wipe across a page and have it OCR and translate what was written there. This would be immensely useful in restaurants.
