I was being facetious but -- seriously -- do you think the average student can find countries on the map and identify their flags? Probably not -- I think it's a pretty reasonable skill for them to learn, which seems to be interupted by the fact that their teacher isn't in the classroom.

I know.. and I really do know where the US too. I think it is a great skill for kids to have.. heck I didn't know what the Colorado flag looked like for the longest time.

I'd just like to know when the law is from. It's probably some older patriotic law. It seems obvious from the story that they dug it up to validate their xenophobia/hatred of Mexicans in the previous "flag scandal" and that this vice principal was concerned about his school getting in trouble.

Unfortunately, I don't have access to the annotated statutes to get the whole story, but it looks like this law was enacted in 1963, if I'm reading the notes on the bottom correctly.

Also of interest, this is located in the section on disloyalty/treason/sedition/anarchy.

The year makes sense because it was around this time that Mexican Americans organized and fought for their rights guaranteed in the treaty of Guadalupe 113 years earlier (they had tried several times before that to enforce the treaty in court, but without avail). The ideas of landgrants and Aztlan were floating around, and someone probably flew Mexican flags, thus very much insulting Anglo-sensibilities.

Funny how some things from back then seem to reenter public discussion over and again...

Not sure why this would violate a law...and why one must remove it when that part of the curriculum is finished. I mean, yes I've read the article, but that doesn't mean it makes sense. Thank goodness my school hasn't had a problem with such things.

I don't care if they learn or not, got myself used to one basic question "is Russian the official language in Poland?"
