I remember 2 " plane scare" periods prior to 9/11, when it was like this:

1986 after the US bombed Libya -- people were VERY scared and cancelled trips to Europe, etc. I think the security we were subjected to then out-did anything I have experience post-9/11

1989 right after the Lockerbie -- I remember the screener even flipped through books in my bag.

Not related to planes, but I saw the aftermath of the famous horseguards IRA bomb in London in 1980 -- we saw the mass chaos and dead horses

I also was in Charles De Galle when they carried out a controlled explosion

My two sort of related experiences:

1. Losing pressure in the air and having to emergency land after dropping to 10,000 ft with no warning and oxygen masks dropping

(not terror related obviously) and

2. Being in Charles de Gaulle airport at the same time as the shoe bomber (not scary at the time, obviously)

You probably lost air pressure first.

First before what? That's pretty much all that happened. Then we went back to Sao Paulo and landed.

Ah yes, I had that good and explained to me immediately upon deplaning! I just wish they had explained WHY we were dropping before they did it :) Isn't that required or part of protocol or something?

It's nice that VJ has a resident flying expert!
