Just wondering if there are any VJers who did their POE at one of the NB/ME borders? I POE in a week and a half and haven't found much about people's experiences crossing this route! I just wanted to get an idea of what to expect. I'm crossing at the new office in Calais. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

We crossed in Houlton and I'd assume the experience at any land crossing is the same. Just pull up, tell them you're activating your visa, they tell you to pull over and go inside where they take care of all your stuff. We had a U-Haul, so we had a list of contents in that, they just looked at the paper, didn't bother looking inside the trailer (which was probably good since it was -36F and im pretty sure the lock was frozen). Took them about an hour to take care of all the paper work. They may seem mean, but they are just strictly business there. They weren't rude, just serious.

Did mine in maine back in 2004--Dec 17 or 18 1004, time flies!! was too easy!! drove up in my U-haul, told them i was there to activate my cr-1. poe dude told me to park my u-haul truck and then go inside. gave my inventory list to the customs dude, he barely looked at it, never looked in my uhaul truck. Immigration people asked a few basic questions, finger printed me, took the mysterious brown envelope and that was about it. very painless. I was there later at night, wasnt busy at all.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Thanks for sharing guys! I just wanted to make sure it was as easy at a small border crossing, as they say it is in the larger ones!

The gal had no clue on how to do a CR-1 visa----so she actually had to call another crossing and then looked in the magic book of instructions which stated how to do it. All went well. Believe it took well under an hour to do.
