Racist Facebook messages land coach, youth league in hot water

Meh, I actually am torn. Yes, his comments were racist and deplorable and he should be fired.

Then I got to thinking...who else is racist that just hasn't been caught yet? How do we go about fully vetting the people around our kids? Should we be monitoring all aspects of teachers' and coaches' personal lives to make sure there's noting horrible that they're doing in their private lives? Where does it stop?

Should he be fired for being racist, or for being caught? Did he do anything in his career there which shows a bias? Or were his 'jokes' - although insanely wrong - just poor taste, and not indicative of true deep seeded racism? Comedians poke fun at religions, races, etc for a lol, it's not really an indicator of true feelings.....was this just a very very very poor taste attempt at a lol?

Most all youth coaches are volunteers. Call me naive, but I doubt most people who volunteer of themselves are calculating scoundrels.

A coach is not a comedian. Anyone in a position of responsibility over children (presumably including children of other races) should be relieved of their duties once it is known that they are racist. Similarly, once anyone in a position of responsibility over children is found out to be a sexual molester, they should also be relieved; we shouldn't not relieve them because of all the molesters we haven't caught yet.

A coach is not a comedian. I agree with that...and we do so because it's not right to have your kids around someone like that...so if that's the case, and it's a danger to have these people around our kids, shouldn't we be vetting these people a little better so that there's no 'secret' racists around them?

1. It's very difficult to 'vet' people for whether they will create an inclusive and welcoming environment for children.

2. Yes, pedophilia has much more long-lasting impacts on the psyche of children than online racists (as opposed to physical world racists, the type who burn churches etc) do. My intention there was to draw an analogy and not to imply equivalence. That said, there is a significant impact to the psyche of a young child when he or she finds out that an adult who he or she looked up to "hates" people like him or her, whether it be due to race or religion or gender or sexual orientation. IMO - we should be doing everything we can to ensure that an adult who is revealed to be a racist or sexist or homophobe once is no longer allowed to further harm young children. I actually think older children can deal with this stuff a lot better.
