Nuevo Progreso (south of Weslaco on FM 1015) has always been quite safe. I love Nuevo Laredo and would visit there again (during daytime) in a heartbeat, si man. Sadly, distance interferes, sigh man.

Daytime and within a few blocks of the border as there are always enough Feds and local police to keep that close safe anyway. Spent many a time in Nuevo Laredo in my day.good.gif

it is as safe as being in many inner cities.
This is chiefly true, and in fact some Mexican border cities/towns are as safe as anywhere. The standard advice from CBP is to stay in the tourist or business areas, during daylight hours, and to avoid doing something objectively stupid or blatant. I've always followed this advice, and I've never felt uneasy or unsafe.
Just beware of surroundings.
True, and good advice anywhere. :)

Right now, cities to avoid on the Mexican side are Cd. Juarez & Reynosa (rather grimy, and too busy and industrial anyway), and the little villages in the Juarez Valley (Praxedis Guerrero & others), sigh man. There's stuff actively going on in the two bigger cities, and the little villages are too small for Federal police protection, so they're described by the local CBP as "completely lawless."

I really like the smaller towns between Reynosa & Piedras Negras (between McAllen & Eagle Pass, TX), si man. And, although to get there one "gots t' wanna," Ojinaga (south of Presidio) is my top favorite "bigger" city, si man. Not knowing a word of Spanish, I went into the Pollo Feliz restaurant there and managed to order (from a clerkette who knew not one word of English) an entire roasted chicken, which I ate in one sitting, burp man.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I miss Juarez. I was just through that way a couple of times and wanted to go check it out (of course not all the way check it out) and it is a shame that it is too dangerous now. I did go over in Laredo but just the few blocks safe enough to do so from the crossing. It is still fun but not the same as a few years ago. I so wanted to take my trip to a great place to eat I remember and drink a brew and eat but sadly didn't. One day the war will be over though.good.gif

Texas being the exception.... We started growing bigger around here at the start of the decade and haven't stopped since....

And you weren't alone, across the south many places saw non-stop building as the people streamed here. (I was one)

Who's going to protect you from the cops? I used to live in TJ. so I wasnt too worried when I went down to Nuevo Laredo last year

for...uh...dental work.

The armoured car with the manned mounted machine gun parked on the bridge did give me 2cnd thoughts. When the cops decided

to search my car, they also decided to throw a 6 inch knife over the back seat into the hatchback area. Then they made me go around

and open up the hatchback. Surprize, nothing there but the knife. I was pissed.

In my 3 years in TJ , I paid one $20 fine for taking a leak between bars. Me and the cops were both laughing as I paid that fine.

that was about 20 years ago.

I wasn't amused when they planted the knife in my car so I had an attitude problem and told them I wasnt paying.

After about 3 hours in the jail cell I had a sudden improvement in attitude. I bargained them down to $100.

I know bribes are nothing new in Mexico but I acctualy prefer paying a bribe for something I did as oposed to something I didnt do.

I think it is partially a matter of supply and demand. There is a much smaller supply of gringos crossing now so they demand more

from the ones that do. Previously if you had gone over these guys heads, you would have stood a chance of getting your money back.

These days you have a better chance of losing yours. (head) I say don't go

IK HOU VAN JOU, MARK

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!
