Hi, my experience with it was we had our AOS interview Sept. 4 2008, we filed the I-601 Sept 29, 2008 to our local field office in Pittsburgh due to my husband's Police Report charges from 1988. The officer advised us to do so. We got the approval letter March 4, 2009. But his GC came January 29, 2009, prior to the letter.

There was no receipt number for the I-601 with our experience.

My memory is failing me. I have the NOA Approval Notice here dated Jan 29 2009. Seems the GC came 2/05/2009 or somewhere around there based on the mailer that the card was attached to.

Hello all VJ friends!

quick question, do we get a receipt number from USCIS for the I-601 to follow? I was told we don't but i also thought i read on here we do.

There is no reciept or notice or online system to track most I601 applications. A handful of overseas Embassies have a link to a spreadsheet that tracks the case numbers and some additional information. USCIS is supposed to have something in place by this year but it has not been announced they want to have I601 with case-status-online like other applications but they must change the software to do it.

If you are going through an overseas embassy to file the I601 the USCIS sub-office with jurisdiction for your case will be the one that contacts you when the application is decided. Most people get the news from the Embassy once they get approved via a phone call to drop off the passport. If the case is denied.. they send a notice within thirty days of the decision, and then you have an opportunity to appeal or re-file. Most of the overseas embassies with USCIS sub-offices have a blurb on the website about contacting them regarding I601's, they seem to all say please refrain from contacting us before six months have expired.

If the case is being adjudicated State-side you will hear from the USCIS office that adjudicates it.

Jen, yes, there is a receipt number for the I-601. If you do not get one after 30 days call USCIS Tier 2 and ask for it. That's what I had to do. This way you can log on to uscis.gov and check progress through the big dots....LOL.... THEN, you can set up an account to get a touch.. Please don't hold your breath waiting for a 601 touch, see hubby..... I have been waiting 8 months for this 601 and perhaps Santa will put it under my tree..... As you can see I'm losing it...

Davey,

Are you in Canada and waiting or are you an AOS case that is stateside waiting for I601 adjudication? Or are you saying that Canada waivers are processed in Vermont? (stateside?)

Typically I601 "receipts" are not "trackable" like other Immigration applications.

See this weblink

2. Why are processing times for I-601 waivers of inadmissibility not posted on the USCIS website?

USCIS Response: USCIS recognizes the importance of sharing as much information as possible regarding processing times with our applicants. Some overseas offices currently post information regarding processing times on their local Department of State websites, and applicants and their representatives are encouraged to check those sites. USCIS understands that it would be helpful for applicants and their representatives to have more information on the status of their applications. We are working to improve our communication of this information and to develop a better process to notify applicants by posting information on our website. This is a priority for USCIS, and we hope to have a better process in place in the near future.

3. What are the current processing times?

USCIS Response: Processing times for I-601s that are filed within the United States are currently 4.3 months.

Processing times differ among our overseas offices, though almost all overseas offices are processing Forms I-601 in less than 4 months. At Ciudad Juarez, approximately 50% of the I-601 waivers filed are adjudicated within 2 days. The average processing time for cases that are referred for adjudication is currently 12-15 months.

4. How can a customer find out where his/her case is being adjudicated?

USCIS Response: Generally, for applications file within the United States, a Form I-601 will be adjudicated where the principal application is being adjudicated. For example, if the Chicago Field Office will be adjudicating the I-485, they will also likely adjudicate the I-601 accompanying that I-485 application.

Form I-601s that are filed outside the United States are adjudicated by the office that has jurisdiction over the country of residence of the applicant. All overseas offices have a P.O. Box and an email address where queries may be sent. This information may be found on the USCIS homepage at www.uscis.gov by clicking on “Find a USCIS Office.”

Here is another response from USCIS to the recommendation that "case status online" for I601 be made available.

http://www.uscis.gov/USCIS/Resources/Ombudsman%20Liaison/Responses%20to%20Formal%20Recommendations/cisomb-2010-response-45.pdf

“USCIS is pleased to report that the USCIS overseas case management system, which has been an Agency priority over the course of FY2010, was released for use by all International Operations staff on August 16, 2010.

The first release of the case management system Case and Activity Management for International Operations (CAMINO), will allow USCIS to post accurate and comprehensive case processing times for Forms I-601 filed with overseas offices. USCIS plans to post actual processing times for overseas filling of Forms I-601 on USCIS’s website by the end of the first quarter of FY2011. With the second release of CAMINO already in development USICS will expand the capabilities of the system so that applicants may access case status via the “My Case Status” features on the USCIS website for Forms I-601 filed overseas.”

So forgive me, you may have already told me this. But you are in Canada, but they process your I601 in Vermont? They hopefully will handle it quickly for you and then you have the transition time back to the Embassy. Have as nice a Xmas under the circumstances as possible.

hi daveyontario

I am in Canada too and I applied for the I601 waiver too. I sent to my embassy which is in montreal. I called USCIS yesterday and they told me that I sent my waiver and passport to embassy so they are going to do it all the process not vermont. I asked them why so they said that if you had sent it to us then we can handle your case but you sent it to your embassy so now they have all the info and they are going to do it.

I dont know where to get receipt number. the consulate officer gave me montreal number and that number is only for schedule an interview and visa info. they dont have enough info. I dont know where should i call. Montreal embassy people only told me that they received my courier. I think when my cheque will get cashed then i will know for sure that they are looking my file.

mine went thru London, and the receipt number you maintain is the case # you are given from the NVC. Every so often London updates their website and a spreadsheet which is updated as the status of waivers progress.

Its not all that often, that it gets updated as waivers in london are given a 6-9 month adjudication timescale.

Hi Rosey,

To my knowledge USCIS Vermont is still processing I-601's from Montreal. Perhaps you were misinformed. Did you speak with a tier 2 Officer at USCIS? How long ago did you send in the waiver to Montreal? It takes about a month to get to USCIS Vermont from Montreal and a while after that you may get a receipt. If you do not get a receipt about 6 weeks from when you sent the waiver call USCIS and speak with a tier 2 Officer and request a receipt. This is what I had to do so he verbally gave it to me and then I was able to use it to log into uscis.gov to check for touches. Vermont is very slow so please don't expect it too soon. It has been 9 months today since mine was received in Montreal. One other thing Rosey, there is no need to send in your passport with the waiver. They will request it when approved. You may want to request the passport back if you plan on travelling in the near future.
