Mother Monet Parham Says Advertising Is Overpowering Parenting in Growing Nutrition War

Like many mothers, Monet Parham wants to feed her daughter one thing, but the girl often wants to eat something else.

It's the unhappy battle over the Happy Meal and Parham, mother of two and a health educator, said it's a fight she just can't win.

"I can tell them 'No' all day long, but then they see commercials that convince them you've really got to have this," Parham said. ...

Has this mom ever considered turning off the TV or restricting the kid to watch the largely commercial free kids programs of PBS? Of course not.

God, how difficult is it to understand that parenting is responsibility and not pointing fingers?

I feel sorry for her husband. Seriously.....

What a pathetic and lazy woman.

Don't breed unless you can take the heat....

Advertising isn't the problem. The same existed when I was a kid. It's the parents ability to teach their kid properly and say NO and then beat the ###### hell out of them when they cry about it...

Yeah, Paul. Please don't breed. If you think that it takes beating your child so it understands what NO means, then you're not fit to be a parent. Not any more so than the mom portrayed in this story.

Every child is different and I've explained this before. Some respond well to being shown what's wrong and right and others respond better to physical pain in relation to knowing what's wrong and right. It's an individual thing. Not every child needs to be spanked, but some do.

Children, ALL children, learn by example. All a child learns by being beaten is fear of the person they depend on and that violence is OK. I feel sorry for you Paul and even sorrier for your spouse and children!

A little fear is good for a child. Part of the problem today is too many children have no fear of authority. So much is a fault of over-protective parents who coddle their kids in every way possible. Just look at how so many act like hooligans in school now days because that authority figure has been taken away from teachers. You dare to single out a kid or raise your voice to them and their parents are up there raising hell.

As I stated earlier, spanking is necessary in some cases and in some it's not. Every child is an individual and learns in different ways. Yes, example is how children learn. How they understand that example though is where it gets tricky. To help them understand, something physical in some circumstances is important. Pain is a negative association and one that works well for some kids. Others can understand by associating it with things they already don't like.

I know some want this perfect "super nanny" society where a "naughty step" is the answer, but life doesn't work that way and human development doesn't work that way. No one way is the necessary right way and you need to be prepared for whatever way works for your unique individual child as a parent.

Personal responsibility is hard.
