Slim, you're the one who made the assertion and I questioned it. The onus is on you.

I don't call 911. When a crime occurs, the police are the last to arrive. Who do you trust to protect YOU and your family?

We have the lowest crime rate in the country in Vermont, half the crime rate of Canada. 1/3 the crime rate of the UK and we allow anyone to carry concealed handguns...no permit or license needed.

Criminals do not like armed victims.

I'm thinkin it has more to do with your demographics than your gun laws. (not that they hurt)

I guess all your cops do all day is enforce traffic laws and eat donuts? Perhaps you guys don't even have cops in Vermont, it's so safe and cosy?

It's nice to know you believe you are superman, equipped to deal with every emergency, that must give you a nice and warm fuzzy feeling.

You just pulled a Booyah there Gary, a misuse of statistics, a red herring and a strawman's argument in one post. You can't compare the crime rate of a rural state to that of entire nations that have major metropolitan areas. To do so is ignorant of how to apply statistics.

I've had to call 911 a few times (non-criminal situations) and they usually get home in 3-4 minutes.

Of course, if there was an actual home invasion by armed scumbags, 3-4 minutes is likely too much.

I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy.

I get the feeling that gun owners really have no idea what the point of a police force is. I am certainly not under any illusions regarding how fast a cop might get to my house to 'save' me should an armed robber invade and decide to shoot.

Just out of interest, how many gun owners have had to get out their guns and repel invaders or in other ways dissuade criminals to stop what they are doing? I'm going to hazard a guess that it's about the same number of times I've had to persuade a criminal not to shoot me.

why don't you tell us what the point of the police force is? additionally, maybe you can tell us how many criminals are deterred by the potential of an armed homeowner?

From the reports I see every day, it appears that none are deterred by the potential of an armed homeowner.

I'm speculating that gun owners don't know BASED ON their posts regarding the necessity of being a gun owner to prevent crime. I know there are not a few that believe that us non gun owning civilians owe the gun owning civilians a debt of gratitude for being able to sleep peacefully in our homes at night, well, all until the day that we are invaded by a gun toting criminal and at that point it's the speculation that in that situation our dying seconds would be taken up wishing that we'd listened to our wise gun owning compatriots; even where it possible to ensure that in the home I would always be in a position to grab a gun and be able to store it safely and securely being as I have a kid in the house. The mind boggles, it truly does.
