I hope Peyton Manning starts smoking. Just because I won't rent to smokers, Australians, any of the Mannings, even the brother that doesn't play football and no one has ever heard of doesn't mean I discriminate. Prove me wrong. If I say it is true then it is and the rest of the world is wrong.

Can you please cite an international study to back up your claim?

And, I'm please to notice you did not mention Bears fans. That's good. I'd like to draw up a lease, please.

The OP doesn't anywhere mention or argue that government should outlaw smoking. It says that landlords should consider not allowing smoking in their apartments. It's the landlord's property, after all. They can make rules to protect their property. It's a good business decision.

For those of you up in arms about rules that restrict what you can do in your own home, what about the neighbors that have to deal with second hand smoke in their living rooms? I had a neighbor whose second hand smoke would frequently make its way into my living room. It was disgusting and there was little to nothing I could do about it except leave. I would be very inclined to rent from a landlord who promised that no one was allowed to smoke anywhere in or near the building.

Sounds more like a horrible ventilation system than anything else and I'd be concerned about that. Anything from cooking to room odorizers could leak their way through in that case. The second-hand smoke is hardly the problem other than that's the one that is chosen to be the focal point in argument.

Big deal, I'd have gladly traded trade that chain smoking neighbor for the one with kid who spends half the day jumping up and down on the floor (my ceiling)....

or the Sweet indian retirees whose cooking stench became part of my life, back when I rented and apt.

If you can't accept that there is diversity in community living.... rent a house.

We pay $50 a month in pet rent. I wouldn't be surprised if we started seeing that for smokers.

Many landlords prohibit smoking - I am a former smoker and hubby still smokes (though is in a seemingly perpetual state of "quitting") and our apartment options have always been more limited. Now, it wouldn't be an issue since he doesn't smoke inside - I've yet to see apartments that prohibit smoking on the balconies as well.

Charging smokers extra seems logical to me if businesses want to do it, my only objection is when the Government tries to get involved mandating these things.

Accept diversity? Such as families with kids and folks of various ethnic backgrounds? Why don't you?
