Wal-Mart, capitalist retailer for the masses, now has its own Communist Party branch. Earlier this month, Communist Party and Communist Youth League branches and a trade union were set up at a Wal-Mart outlet in the northeastern industrial city of Shenyang, a staffer in the store's communications department said Thursday, confirming Chinese media reports.

[...]

At Wal-Mart headquarters in Bentonville, Ark., international division spokeswoman Beth Keck said the party branch opening was a routine matter.

"It our understanding that party members and the party have routinely organized branches in enterprises in China and we respect their right to do so," Keck said.

If liberals were communist-sympathizers supported by China, Walmart might have been vindicated. Yet, most liberals have their issues with China and communism/totalitarianism, and they will probably not consider this any sign that Walmart is getting better.

And even if Walmart actually wanted to have unions at their Chinese branches - most likely the Chinese government pressured them - it wouldn't change the working conditions for Walmart employees in the US.

It's the guilty-by-word association. Liberals support social programs to a greater degree than Conservatives, so the Right calls us Socialists - which is associated with Communism. Walmart does more to support the Chinese government, along with Rupert Murdoch's exclusive satellite services, not to mention Yahoo, than anyone supporting organized labor or national healthcare.

Yup. But then, acknowledging the complicity of capitalism (whether corporations or governments) in supporting governments supposedly hostile to it would force some people to reconsider their world view. :P
