Hi everybody.

I have a question about, what kind of evidence i need to show, when i go to the interview, if i think i can support myself ?

How much do i need, before they accept that i can support myself ? what kind of papers, do i need to bring ?

Best regards

Martin

The USC does the financial sponsoring, the immigrant is out of the picture.

Phil (Lockport, near Chicago) and Alla (Lobnya, near Moscow)

As of Dec 7, 2009, now Zero miles apart (literally)!

If you have enough income that will continue from the same source once you move to the USA, that can be stated on an I-134 and documented. If you have three times the income requirement in liquid assets in your own name, that can be stated and documented as well. Regardless, the US Citizen must provide an affidavit of support. In come that will not continue from the same source is not counted.

Not correct. See previous answer.

how much is enough ? lets say if i have between 10-15.000 dollars, is that enough.

i ask because my fiance is only a student, and only work a couple of hours, but i have earned money while studying and working in Denmark, and saved it.

but i'm not working anymore, only studying at the moment, and finished with that in january.

does it mean, that i can show papers from my bank account, showing how much i have for the interview or do i need more ?

and how about my fiancee, should she still fill out a affidavit of support ?

i suddenly got nervous about this, because i was almost sure i could just sponsor myself, when i get the k1 visa... i want to be 100% sure that i do everything right, so i can be with my fiance soon.

You have to have 3 times more in assets, than the Dept. of Health and Human Services published Poverty Guideline (for this year) for the number of persons in your family. Assuming that it is just you and your fiancee (2 people), the poverty guideline is $14,570. So in order to only qualify with just your liquid assets, you must have about $44,000. I think, depending on the consulate, you may also use a combination of assets from current employment ( your fiancee's part time work, for example) and your assets in order to qualify. But this must be verified through your consulate....in fact the allowance of self-sponsorship should also be verified first.

okay thanks.

i don't have 44.000 dollars (that's a lot for a student).

so how can i get my fiance to sponsor me, if she don't have much ? she needs the same amount or less ?

this is something we didn't think much about :(

The "public charge" aspect is essentially a formality - a piece of paper stating that, should you fall into financial dire straits, the buck will stop with the sponsor and not the state. That's why self-sponsorship is so demanding and difficult an endeavor: it's easy to transfer the burden from the state to your sponsor; it's extremely difficult to convince someone you'll never fall on hard times.

You fiance needs to provide proof of an income at 100-125% (depending on your consulate) of the poverty level for the size of her household by filling out an I-134. You can find those guidelines here.

The decision in the case of the K-1 interview is largely subjective, and in the hands of the consulate officer interviewing you. Technically you could be approved without a qualifying sponsor, but your interviewer is likely to look ahead to the post-marriage AOS stage, which requires the I-864 (the success of does hinge on strict adherence to the poverty guidelines).

Long story short: the I-134 is highly advisable, but not strictly a deal breaker for just the K-1. If your fiance cannot meet the 125% poverty level guidelines, then you can find another US citizen to sponsor you instead, though you fiance will still be required to complete the I-134.

Sorry, meant "success of which does hinge"

- And it's worth remembering that the size of the household of your fiancee (or whoever sponsors you) includes you.
