got news for ya - there are rules of engagement in every conflict. you just don't go in shooting up everything that moves or looks suspicious.

Guess all them classes telling us the rules of war and how to act and when to act may be called rules of engagement. Remember being told that if we follow a illegal order that we would be prosecuted so don't do it and report the attempt as even not reporting the attempt is illegal. Also mistakes do happen in the heat of combat and that is taken into account but this failed all and the soldier failed. He will have a long time to contemplate his misdeed.

it's apparent you've never been in a combat zone. nor does the un decide how the us conducts war - that's the mission of the jag corps along with various conventions (hague, geneva, and so on).

amateurs amuse me when it comes to detailing what they really know about combat.

Charles, that's mildly insulting to those of us who may fairly be called "amateurs", in the sense you mean here. I.e. civilians who have not actually been in combat. Any 5 year old understands that there are rules of fair play in a playground fight - you don't pull hair, you don't kick in the nuts, etc. And any reasonable adult understands that the same applies to grown up fights - there are rules of conduct in warfare, and breaching them invites military justice. I know that, you know that, everyone with an ounce of common sense knows that. Gee, I guess that leaves someone out in the cold.

Actually it was closer to 32 million total. Stalin 22 million and Hitler 12 million....that's the low ball estimate. Hitler was on his way to #1 but Stalin outlasted him.
